Customers who won't bag their own items * 1
    #21548288 - 04/14/15 08:34 PM (9 years, 1 month ago)

I work at a very busy supermarket as a cashier. The majority of customers don't bag their own items. In some situations I understand, aside from obvious reasons such as handicapped people, why people don't, such as they have a small order and the cashier can make the transaction get over with quicker. What I don't get is customers with big enough orders, especially with BIG orders, who stand there watching, texting, whatever. Yes, I know we get paid to do it, but I don't know why anyone wouldn't help out with something such as that. If you're lazy, not good at packing, fine, at least let me know or show your appreciation to me. I'm not bothered by everybody who doesn't bag. A lot of the people seem nice, appreciative, etc. Some people though either don't respect us, or doesn't get it. One of the worst is the people who bring their own bags and give them to me to pack. Another of the worst is the ones who tell you how to pack.

If there is anyone here who doesn't bag their own items, I'd like to know why. I'm not saying you're bad or anything, I just want to know why coming from your end. Is it because you simply never thought about it, or didn't know you can bag your own? Also I'd like to know if anybody has similar experiences as a cashier.

As far as I'm concerned that is not my job, if a cashier asks for me to do it I will but that shit isn't something I get paid for

I love bagging my own items.  That way I can organize them as I please and make it easier to unload when I get home.  Although I have also been told to stop when someone comes to the lane I am at to bag my stuff.  I usually say, 'don't worry, I got it', but it doesn't always work.

Shit, at the rate people get tipped these days we will have to start tipping cashiers after they bag are shit.  Just a thought.

If the store has people baggin items, why would I squish in beside them and start packing stuff with them when I should be paying for it. If there's nobody bagging then yeah I'll do it or normally I just go through self checkout if I dont have a whole cart full of groceries.

I dont mind baggin my own shit cause I have a way of organizing them/putting certain things together but I load them on the conveyor in that order anyways so they get bagged that way if the person isn't an idiot.

Where i live, the cashier scans the item, puts the item in the bag, and proceeds with the next. Once the bag is full, they detach the bag from the support structure that keeps it open and put it in 'to be taken' bay and prepare a new bag (1second) and continue.
I didn't even realise that there were places that scan items and then bag them later, that seems very impractical.

I always do.  I want to get the fuck out as fast as possible.  Standing there waiting for somebody else to do it detracts from the time I have to do other shit.  Like post here.  The people who don't bag aren't fucking you.  They are fucking the people in line behind them.

i frankly agree with you, but its not worth getting fussed at by someone ...offending them...and being in their way.

if they offer i'll gladly step up, i dont put the bug spray with the milk/eggs/fruit...and the bag people sometimes do.

i'd be fucking happy to do it.

here's why, the customer just spent the last half hour/hour putting those items INTO the cart.  The LEAST the store can do is pack them, idealy you can walk that shit out to my car and put it into it.  People are getting way too comfty with this china idealogy and walmart crap.  The reason your job sucks is because of overpopulation, you're being asked to checkout more and more people per hour, so packing the bags feels like its not part of your job, really it isn't, they should hire more people, but don't, for profits.

There's more shoppers today than ever, and i swear to god, there are less people working at checkout compared to 50 years ago.

man... the walking to the car and putting the groceries in thing is nice IF YOU WANT IT.

but there was a local store, who would not let customers take their own bags....

but the idiots were always slower than me, and i walk slow as hell because of chronic pain....

so while that should be available.

i also want the choice.

Don't remember smelling cat piss, but I have seen a lot of dirty ones. There's a LOT of filthy customers, that's a whole other topic.

When I was working retail I had no less than a dozen different people bring in those bags. Every single one of them reeked of cat piss and was covered in hair. I guess here the requirement to use those bags is be a crazy cat lady.

its really amazing how dirty some people are, my mom vacmmm's like twice a year, showers like twice a month.  She visits people at their homes, one of them asked for help moving.  So out of the kindness of my heart and for free, AND using my truck and gas, i go over to help them move a couch.

Man these lazy sob basterds, i get over there, they are all standing around talking, smoking cig's, kids running around half naked.  So they are like, here's the couch, oh, you gotta take the legs off it first to get it through the door....im like....ok.  Turn it over, thought it was the legs u turn to get off, crack the first one (they are right there just watching, they've done it before but said nothing)......Then im like.....so.....can i have a screw driver then?  OH yah sure hang on!

Legs off, then they are like, oh yah, you gotta take the door off to get it out too.......WHATTTTTTTTTTTTT, these lazy dudes could have done all this shit before i got there, entire time, like 5 or 6 people just standing around, they are moving but not doing anything.

Anyways, that is lazy, oh and dirty, there couch was covered in cig burns, stains, ect, and one of these bitches had the nerve to say "oh he don't care about it" when i cracked the leg

oh and i forgot, apparently they thought i was going to carry a couch BY MYSELF, nobody there was gunna help, they all complained of bad backs n shit, whatttttttttttt

This is what happens at the places here where the cashier bags stuff for you. No real option of the customer doing it.

At the places where they don't, there are dual conveyor belts and they switch to the other one for the next customer. In those places, usually they have an area with a bunch of cardboard boxes that you can use instead of bags if you want.

There used to be baggers at my store a while before I got there. I think the reason they gave for dropping that position (probably just moved all of them to the register or whatever) is to give the employees more money, which they did. Whether is was that, for profits, or for both, I wonder if it's an issue at all for this Whole Foods to have baggers at least for weekends. Being a cashier there is probably the most repetitive position in the store. I like being asked to do carts for a while. Some days I don't get asked to, so I'm on register for eight hours usually, unless I do returns, which I rarely do (I'd love for that to be a position, I'd return things for all departments for the whole shift and be fine with it).
