Morel? Nahh!
    #21543775 - 04/13/15 07:49 PM (9 years, 1 month ago)

I haven't been into mushrooms for many years now. As a kid we hunted them in the Washington Cascades.
Then in the '70s, I became enamored with Psilly, hunting, growing and consuming them for several years with great enthusiasm.
After living in Alaska for almost 35 years, I have emigrated to Hawaii.
The spring rains have brought a massive upwelling of  mushrooms around our property.
I've been curious, but not curious enough to try to ID what is coming up, until now.

When I first saw these I thought they might be morels.
But, now I do not think so.
First of all this is not the type of climate I think they would want.
We are located on the windward side of The Big Island with high rainfall.
In a year and a half the coolest temperature we've seen here is almost down to 55*F. I don't think that is cool enough.
Here are the pics:

I'm thinking that they're probably false morels.
can anyone ID them for me?

If you are uncertain still, wait for a trusted identifier to roll through. It won't take long.

What about that cap?
I understand that the outer edge should be attached to the stem for it to be a true morel.

Definitely not morels. It is one of the netted stinkhorns, maybe Phallus multicolor.

Solo, next time you should post your ID requests in the Mushroom Hunting & Identification Forum.

Thats definitely not a morel. Looks like some sort of stink-horn.

You'd have better luck posting this in the Mushroom Hunting and Identification Forum.

Thanks folks.
Next time I'll get it posted in the right place.
I'd never heard of a stink horn.
But, that sounds like an appropriate name for it.
It is a bit odoriferous.
