true wealth
    #2154092 - 12/03/03 02:56 AM (20 years, 3 months ago)

True wealth lies in wanting what we get. This I believe is where our true power also lies.  so what does "wanting what we get" mean?  well think of the flipside for a second, "getting what you want."

notice when you get something you want, sure you enjoy it, maybe even for a while, but something will have to replace that soon with something else we want. it depends on the object that decides HOW HAPPY YOU'LL GET.  this is kinda what drives capitalism here.

wanting what we get doesn't need any object replacement for joy because the object doesn't need to be replaced. The reason is because how happy we are isn't determined by the object. Instead it is the enjoyment of the here and now.

And this is what I mean by TRUE WEALTH, how little we need to be fully content.

after all, " to be upset over what you don't have, is to waste what you do have."

that's why the wealthiest thing you can own is a smile.  it's worth more than gold ya know!

Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

Anarcho-socialism: The political and economic theory elabourated by Adam Smith in The Wealth of Nations, in which the workers control the production of goods and services which are then bought and sold in an open market. Formerly known as capitalism.

Capitalism: The degenerate condition also discussed by Adam Smith in the same work; the merger of government and corporate interests. Formerly known as corporatism or fascism.

Socio-politicism: the inter-subject capacity of open-frame markets to conflate source-based inflation, thusly protacting a societies ability to maximize the discomfiture of homeo-static monetary trade.

Easy to say as you likely have a computer, electricity, heat, shelter, running water, etc.

Test your philosophy on the homeless then report back. Ask if they would rather have a hot meal or a smile from you.

I have been homeless and happy.

But then again, I grew up without much so maybe I just don't give a shit.

But you weren't posting here when you were homeless. I doubt being, cold, hungry, and without shelter is conducive to happiness.

If you are so cold, hungy, and without shelter, and close to death, you might start having hallucinations where you are dancing with God, and then it would be conducive to happiness.

Seriously, though, happiness is all in the mind. It may damn near be impossible at times, but it is still possible..
Peace.

You probably will not believe what I did when I was homeless, But I'll tell you anyway.

I spent my time jogging and doing pushups. You see, I decided to be homeless about ten years ago for about three months. I went south during the summer and stayed near an apple orchard and had about 200$ on me. I ate good and became pretty healthy during that period.

I wanted to kill myself until I made the decision to do this. I had a good job driving a truck and just up and quit and blew my families collective fucking mind!

I read a few books and jogged all the time. I was very happy during this time.

Came back, got my job back, And was ready to give it all up again when I discovered this place and mushrooms.

I am now going to a university and have a much better job.

BTW, during that time I would hang out in town on the weekends at a little baptist church and peck away at thier piano. I can now play anything and have written quite a bit of music. :smirk:

I was happy and homeless at the same time. But yeah, I was also well fed and smart. I had a pup tent!

I find it funny that someone always brings up worst case scenarios whenever this subject is brought up.

Of course it would be damn near, if not totally, impossible to be happy under these conditions!

Happiness is not simply a matter of pretending to be happy then... events beyond one's control can influence or even dictate happiness.

From your account, you weren't cold or hungry or without shelter.  There are different levels of homelessness, personally I don't want to be a homeless guy like they ones that live in my city (we have a cold winter).  I wouldn't be happy, no matter how much I was hallucinating.  Big cities also require money to survive in.  Running around an apple orchard in the summer for a few months is a different story from what Swami was talking about.  I can go camping with a tent for a few months but that doesn't make me "homeless".

The hardcore homeless people I see don't look happy at all, they've been homeless for years, they are not well fed, they live in makeshift cardboard boxes, and they don't have orchards to run around in.  Maybe they really are happy underneath but are secretly hiding their happiness.  Who knows, its all in the mind right?

people try to find loopholes in everything, yet if they only realized that logic itself is the greatest manmade loophole :frown:

Dont worry bro, unlike these people I DO understand the concept you are trying to convey, and I also know it to be 100% true.

happiness isnt the word however, being content is.

Some people can bring themselves to actually like to feel pain. So, if this particular POW is one of those people, than I am sure he can be happy.

Thinking positively doesn't make one happy, unless, of course, you are happy when you think positively. Happiness is a state of mind. While someone might not be able to bring themselves to be happy while being tortured, that is an extreme situation.

Some people can only be happy when they are drunk. Others can be happy after getting a day's work in. Some people can be happy WHILE working. Kids can be happy damn near in any situation. If someone is yelling or they are feeling pain, they aren't going to be happy.

The funny thing is, a lot of people that "have a computer, electricity, heat, shelter, running water, etc." aren't happy. When people like me or Kaiowas go on about being happy with what you have, I don't think we are preaching to homeless people, because if we were, we wouldn't be doing it on here.

Seriously, though, this is all about expanding the list of things that make you happy. As long as you are on here and reading what I am saying, I suspect that you have enough to be happy almost all of the time. When you become homeless or are tortured, THEN shrug off what we have to say. hehe
Peace.

I made a choice not to be cold and hungry. I chose to be happy. I can choose to be happy or sad at any given moment. If you can't, I am sorry.

Who said anything about a game? :wtf:

It seems, by your extreme example, that you do not think that happiness is a frame of mind. To bad for you.

I have a choice.

Unless there is someone sticking me with needles. in that EXTREME case, I don't think that I would have a choice.

pbtbtttbbbthhtthh...

try again. corporatism (fascism) and capitalism are not the same thing, nor did adam smith ever suggest anything remotely like "anarcho-socialism" (which is a contradiction in terms and a just a bit more outlandish than most utopian fantasies).

capitalism is a state of affairs in which human beings are free to own property, to expend their resources in ways they see fit, and to engage in voluntary transactions with other individuals, all so long as they do not initiate force against other people. it is not the same thing as fascism. it's not even close.

Testing the upper and lower bounds of a hypothesis is a good measure of it's consistency and validity.

Correct. So what have we learned?

By testing the upper and lower bounds of this hypothesis, it seems that happiness is somewhat relative to a persons situation.

Extreme situations ,like torture, would make it very difficult to experience happiness willfully.

But in the broader range of experience it seems atleast plausible that we do have a choice.

At the very least, in the broader range of experience you have some control over your situation, Which gives some opportunity for happiness.

I will concede that the more control you have over your own situation, the more likely it is you will be happy.

But I still contend that we have atleast some choice most of the time.
