would a crockpot work for jar sterilization, or am I just stoned?

I suppose you would have to sterilize them longer, but can it be done sucessfully?

i pastuerized worm castings and straw in a crock pot once. it worked well, you just need to watch out for humidity. water likes to steam out of a crock pot.

Crockpots on a high setting only get to 160-170?F. Not good for sterilization.

Like Automan said, it will work for pasteurisation. Pasteurisation is the preferred method of preparation for dung...one of the best substrates for our friends.

I tried steralization using a crockpot once. It didn't work. Everything turned green.

Did you take the temperature of the substrate? If so, how long did you maintain the temp? Did you keep a control to determine if it was your inoculation that caused the contam or if it was inherent to the crock pot prep?

I did none of those things, but it was the only complete failure I ever experienced. The syringe was clean I used it on other jars. I sterilized for 4 hours at 200 degrees.
