Low TECH Autoclave from Ghana and other fantastic low tech applications!

Hello everyone,
I am new to Shroomery but not new to Organic farming in general. I just found all of these wonderful Video's from the Kumasi Institute in Ghana and so many of these low tech methods for Mushroom Farming can be applied here in the "West" as well.
I did a search here and see that someone did a post last year in general regarding the Kumasi Institute(Peace Cops Ghana Project) but these Videos's are more subject specific.
The ingenuity and use of available recycled bottles, old newspaper etc. is remarkable.
(Using soda pop and beer bottles for grain substrate containers. I realize this not an "ideal" container but when you don't have much money you make do with what you can get. I have tons of Canning Jars so don't need to resort to this but it is still inspiring to see)
Also, many of us do not have the financial resources to be able to afford fancy Autoclaves so I will personally be doing the oil drum over a pile of logs method. (I have the Mountains, Woods and a stream in a protected area so I am good to go.)
I hope all of you are as inspired by these video’s as I am. Granted, the Mushrooms being grown are "Oyster Mushrooms" but the methods are universally inspiring AND APPLICABLE!

(Tashi Delek is traditional greeting in Tibetan roughly meaning "Good Fortune to you!" I lived in Kathmandu, Nepal for a few years so I have a big love for Tibetan and Nepali Culture(s)

Tashi Delek to you too! Its been too long since I last heard that!
We have steel drums (free, recup) sitting on electric cooking hobs (20 euros/2nd hand) wired up to cheap thermostats (25 euros) and insulated (fibreglass batts, cheap!). The advantage is you don't need to babysit the steriliser. We turn it on and leave it running for about 24 hours. It takes a long time to warm up but after it hits 95 the thermostat throttles back the heat.
We let it run so long because it takes a while for the core to get up to 95 as well but you could easily set up another thermostat and a timer with a probe to the inner most bag so you could more accurately work out when you can start timing 12 hours for sterilisation.
I set it running at about 10 in the morning after bag prep. Then I just leave it till 9 the next morning. I turn it off, remove the insulation and let it cool. I remove the bags before evening (its in the lab) and put the bags out on the table ready for inoculation the next day...

Tashi Delek McChieftain!
So glad I put a smile on your face with such a lovely Tibetan greeting.
I so appreciate your input with your "Low Tek" mass sterilization applications!
There is another Video that shows how the drum is constructed with a grate inside at the bottom (same concept as anyone who has a pressure cooker and done Canning, Jellies , Jams, Substrates).
Your electric hook up seems super smart and how you gauge your temps too. I am a visual person so if you post or pm me your rig set up I would really appreciate it.
I was hoping this Post would stimulate a good exchange of low tek idea's! (even though Shroomery is bountiful with so many innovations, -Thank you very much Shroomery folks)
Big Hugs,
Lotus

Incredibly inspirational work shown in those videos. Everything they do is so straight forward and low tech. Thank you for sharing.

It's interesting that by inoculating at the top and not shaking, the only area exposed will be colonized before contaminants can grow. Very cool.

Here's another approach.
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/17764857
Are they doing grain transfers in a glove box?
Top inoculation also generates less heat so your less likely to bake your mycelium. Takes forever though.
