Music on Mushrooms

I've never heard music on mushrooms, can anyone describe what, say, Pink Floyd, or any music for that matter, is like while tripping?

Music is essential for a trip.....it's really as simple as that. I'm not going to even try to go into detail about how great it is listening to music while tripping when I could just say "Find out for yourself" It really wouldn't matter what I said anyway, because it couldn't fully describe it.

my taste changes completely.  Stuff that seems like would be enjoyable can be unpleasant to hear, and stuff that isn't all that interesting sober can be amazing.  For example, I couldn't stand the Atom Heart Mother Suite by Pink Floyd, even though its one of my favorite songs.  I didn't recognize it, and I hated it.  The only thing I could say about it was "this is shark attack music, turn it off" :lol:

whereas Death Cab for Cutie - 405 acoustic, was amazing.

Imagine the happiest you've been in your life, and multiply that a few times. That's what a good experience with music is like! Quite possibly the best feeling there is out there - like a orgasm for an hour. I never trip without music.
If you're thinking of playing Pink Floyd on a trip, I'd recommend Ummagumma (the Live disc, not studio) and Dark Side of the Moon.

For me, music is essential. It influences my mood incredibly, if I am feeling uncomfortable a change of track does wonders.

I hope its as spectacular as you guys say it is... about the my taste changing... there is something scary yet intriguing about listening to music that I've become so farmiliar with, and in a way I want to hear it from a different state of mind.

Music will shape your trip.  The last two times I tripped, I listened to one of my favorite bands, Kashmir (a danish band similar to radiohead).

Both times I was in the mountains.  The first trip I was staring at a group of trees that were dancing and moving (morphing) with the music.  I don't remember a huge amount from that trip for some reason.

The second trip with Kashmir was amazing.  It was again in the mountains, but I kept my eyes closed for about an hour or so.  I let the whole CD "Zitilities" guide my trip.  It was a beautiful, breathtaking experience, and I still remember many of the amazing images I saw that day.

Another time I was tripping I was trying to work the mp3 player on my computer, couldn't figure it out, and listened to the same song ("Link 80 - The Last Time") for about 40 minutes.

If anyone is interested in Kashmir, PM me and I'll hook you up with some songs.  They are excellent! Especially for tripping! :mushroom2:

Let me put it this way...

I walked into the bathroom at my frat and two of my friends who have both tried mushrooms were comparing them to X...not in a comparing feeling kind of way, they were just like, sure shrooms were cool but X is just a completely different level of euphoria. I just mentioned offhand to them that I liked shrooms more than x, just for different reasons. They just couldn't comprehend that statement. Of course one has to recognize that some people are just not psychadelic people. Some people love coke so fucking much...I've done it enough to know that it doesn't do anything worth its cost for me.

And I can't justify my statement with just one aspect of the shroom experience but for me music is a huge part of it, especially after my last experience. I have yet to explore more musical experiences, but I had one experience on a 3.5 g lipa yai dose and they must have been awesome....So here is a brief description of the musical portion of my trip...my friend, actually one of the guys in the bathroom, was tripping with us, we had just dosed, and he wanted to listen to eminem. I was like whatever, I like eminem, and I dont' feel anything so whatever. About 30 minutes later, as I was starting to come up, I felt incredibly incredibly anxious. I was at the poitn where I wasn't sure if I was feeling the shrooms yet or not...I'm sur eyou know what point I am talking about. So I said ok this music is starting to suck, and I put on Shpongle, their first CD "Are you Shpongled", from start to finish. The creepy yet relaxing ambient songs of the first minute of hte first track calmed my nerves...and then the bassline came in, and then as those first fleeting chords appeared (those who have heard this song know what I'm talking about) suddenly a wave of euphoria came over me, something beyond, yet different, from the euphoria of x....the euphoria of x is very very simple...great but simple...caused simply by the release of a single type of neurotransmitter...well a little dopamine too but nothing compared to the seritonin...while shrooms, the eurphoria you get from shrooms, and in my opinion espeically the appropriate shrooms+music combo, is much more complex, in a very, very good way.

As the CD continued and my trip intensified I found myself curled in a ball in my chair, eyes closed, facing the speakers, and experiencing some of hte most amazing things I've ever experienced completely behind my closed eyelids (that is btw one of the best tracks on that CD).

If you are into electronic music you must trip to this CD. Even if you are not, this is some of the most psychadleic music I've heard and all I can say is that my closed eye visuals were galaxic in scale, it felt like this colorful kalaidoscope world in my head, created and responding to the music, was at itmes as big as our galaxy yet it felt a part of my mind and brain...

Anyway that was my feeble, feeble attempt at relating what music+shrooms is capable of doing....ambient music is also necessary for stimlulating conversation, after that trip I went to a guys room and he put some nice abient music on and it really relaxed me and allowed me to have some great conversations...there are many purposes for music while shrooming...make sure you always have something playing and if you aren't feeling it (which is quite possible on shrooms, I get very indecisive) just keep changing the music until you find something that really sounds good....if it really sounds good, try becoming part of it....you'll know what I mean.

Pink Floyd - Darkside of the Moon is the greatest trip album of all time. I think that would be an excellent choice for your first time.

You don't need drugs to feel some mad euphoria just from hearing music though, I don't know if anyone is like me, but some songs I like a lot I can keep some mad euphoria for 5-10 minutes when I concentrate hard enough...

Yes, I have :grin: I finally got around to doing that on my last shroom trip, and whoooo, that was pretty intense, yet the best fun I've had for a while. Disco Volante is one of those albums that scares the shit out of me, yet also makes me grin my ass off (the cartoony feeling of the music, and the rapid psychotic changes of style and the lyrics).

Oh yes!  Mr. Bungle is excellent tripping music.  If you like them I recommend you check out the following Mr. Bungle influenced/affiliated projects:

Estradasphere
Cortex Bomb
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum
Secret Chiefs 3

I have to recommend listening to Estradasphere's track "DB Hell."  It is just amazing and the ending is hilarious.

That's a tricky business, I'd say. While some songs can be quite nice in my opinion, it's hard to find more than a track or two per album that works. I'd suggest 'People's Intinctive Travels on the Paths of Funk and Rhythm' by A Tribe Called Quest. Their first
album, lovely so long as you can tolerate the speedy lyrics. Beastie Boys intrumental tracks tend to work well, and some of the mellower songs. Mr. Lif can be good stuff, too.
It's easy to come across hiphop that's completely intolerable when tripping, though, so I
tend to avoid it.

I like to listen to eminem while tripping, His lyrics get me thinking And his beats get me in a good mood.

P.S. Eminem came up with most of "The SlimShady LP" while using shrooms. Thats why I think it plays to my trips so well.

Personally I don't like most hip hop, but Eyedea and Sage Francis
are both amazing while tripping, if you enjoy lyrical content.
Check out these tracks:

Eminem is cool, but I always thought Eminem was a faker. He brings shrooms up in his songs and stuff but he's a rapper, and most rap is just silly. They seem to egotistical in trying to be "hardcore". Everything he says is said comically, and can bring you into a good mood when stuck in a loop of negative thoughts, but don't take him seriously. He probably just jacks off and smokes weed all day, seriously. All rappers glorify how their exciting life of sipping 40s and smokin blunts and busting caps and stuff, but its just bullshit for the attention that gets their record sold. Still, rappers have good poetry skills. Just my thoughts...

I tend to enjoy most anything I like sober so I just make a long playlist. Every once in awhile a song comes on that totally blows my mind on that particular trip, but if I try to relive the experience its never as good. I would reccomend just listening to your favourite tunes and judging for yourself. I'm still gonna have to reccomend my favourites tho. :grin: These are songs that have melted my mind while tripping.

Im surprised nobody has mentioned anything classical yet - so let me be your guide... It may take a bit of effort to d/l it on the net, but what you want is "Scriabin - Sonata No.2 in G Sharp Minor"... If anybody finds it, please let others on the thread know your reactions! - I've never listened to it tripping (Only tripped once before), but from what I know from listening to it stoned, and also my 1 experience with music tripping, you want this. Music is always an integral part of my tripping experience. In fact, as I type, I'm throwing together a CD of the best Phish songs to trip to, in preparation for tomorrow... starting with "Bouncing Around the Room" from A Live One. :smile:

Here's an idea, if you don't mind challenging yourself. The Mars Volta - Deloused in the Comatorium. It is an INTENSE experience on hallucinogens. It's also on tomorrow night's playlist. :oogle:

As far as other's suggestions go, Dark Side of the Moon is a brilliant idea, as is DJ Shadow. As for other hip hop, if you're into that, I'm thinking that positive hip hop like Mos Def, the Roots, or Jurassic 5 might be pretty awesome to listen to, but I sometimes find repetitive beats jarring when on hallucinogens, which is why I avoid most electronica. Some electronic music is awesome to listen to while tripping, though, ie. Sigur Ros, or trip-hop like Portishead, Tricky, or Massive Attack. Finally, classical is a brilliant idea, especially if you can find something you really like... I suggest Stravinsky's Rites of Spring, or Schoenberg's Pierrot Lunaire, especially the last two sections of part 1. Both Stravinsky and Schoenberg can be pretty...  heavy... but worth listening to.

Word. Kid A is my all-time favorite tripping album. It's great to just relax and let it envelope you in sound. "How to Disappear Completely" is so relaxing to me I've put it on loop before I went to bed a couple times.

Try "entheogenic", they have 2 albums, the last (2003) is called 'spontaneous illumination. The style.. i'd describe it as chill-out psytrance. I just downloaded it, and i'll definatley hear it on my next trip.

music is awesome during a hardcore trip for me because the music completely controls the visuals i get. The intensity, the colors, the sharpness, and it controls my mood and reaction. Music is essential to trips in my opinion. I really could spend the entire trip just listening to music and not moving, and feeling complete euphoria

Listening to Tool - The Grudge has been my best experience on shrooms so far.  I'm a huge Tool fan to begin with though.  I think the best Tool songs to trip to are The Grudge, Lateralus, Parabol/Parabola, H., 46 & 2, Pushit, Disposition and Third Eye.  Opeth is good if you like death metal type stuff.  Even if you don't they have more chilled out songs like To Bid You Farewell.  Shpongle and Infected Mushroom are awesome.

I haven't been able to trip to Entheogenic yet but I can't wait to try it.  Good stuff.
Also the Reqiuem for a Dream soundtrack, great classical.  Mainly the different season Overtures...check out the LotR: The Two Towers Theme for a different version of those songs...it has added vocals and other stuff.

Aphex Twin - Bucephalus Bouncing Ball
CRAZY song, I love it.  Along with a lot of Aphex Twin material.
Listening to music is definatly my favorite aspect of the shroom trip.  Smoke some weed on the comeup  :spliff:  put on some great music and sit back and relax....

I think Lateralus is the trippiest Tool song. I love that really heavy part where Justin Chancellor uses a whammy pedal.

I totally agree :wink: listening to sphongle while you are tripping completely different than when you are sober... sometimes when i play sphongle sober it brings back memories of a couple of nights... even though it almost sounded like a totally different song at the time  :tongue2:

I totally agree when he says "when you hear music on hallucinogenics [hallucinogens], you hear it in a New Way" hehe I really like that, and one can tell that he fully understands this New Way by listening to his music on psychedelics... You can see what he means because he takes FULL ADVANTAGE of this New Way that your mind takes in audio on certain substances. He interacts with and compliments this slight difference in audio processing. There are other artists who do this, but none in my opinion come near the absurdity and blatant, in-your-face tactics that Posford seems to come up with

Incubus is very pleasant to trip to. The emotion they're capable of putting out in some songs is just insane.

Like, pretty much every CD they've released.

I have tripped once using mushrooms, and I happened to listen to scriabin- an entire side of record- I think especially sonata 5. The music just carried me along, and it felt as if it was so broken down so as to permit me to travel between the notes. Much of Scriabin's work is the epitome of sensuality and transcendence, and I have had amazing moments of clarity from listening and focusing while sober. The poeme opus 32 (?) would be great, though it is short. Scriabin makes logical sense as well- he was a mystic symbolism (before his crazy ideas alienated him from even the most serious mystics), which has its roots in the dionysian mysteries which may have involved ingestion of ergot.

Estradasphere is the most intense music to listen to while tripping, or just plain sober. It changes so much, from hard metal, to salsa, in 8 measures. But they do everything, like evil carnival music, super mario tunes, surf rock, EVERYTHING!.

Also, if you like listening to Tool while tripping, try King Crimson.
And if you like eastern type music try anything from Bollywood, or go find this kick ass cd called "Tabla Beat Science".

Also, while extremely sideways on mushrooms, i got to see Praxis live at Bonnaroo, and i was about 5 feet away from Buckethead when he started to do his little shiver thing. Praxis is kind of hard to listen to while tripping, but if you can get used to it, it is great..

Also, Mr. bungle or aphex twin is great to blow someones mind with if they havent heard them before while tripping.

And for those seemingly apocalyptic and epic trips (i hope some know what i am talking about) Secret Chiefs 3 "Book of horizons" or "Book M" will make you feel like you are in a movie or about to save the world.

I think a lot of Opeth could be appreciated by a lot of people. A lot of songs like For Absent Friends or Patterns in the Ivy, Credence, Harvest, Drapery Falls etc. are good examples of their classical/non-death metal stuff.

Anymore, I find that Opeth is the only music to be intense enough or worthwhile to listen to these days- they're really good musicians and the songwriting has an emotional quality i've never experienced with most kinds of music. Plus all of their songs are "epic," ranging usually from 10-20 minutes in length - they take you on an awesome, huge journey.

But when tripping... I too usually cant pay enough attention to appreciate any music. :P

But a lot of people should find those songs to be very moving, well-structured and well-played songs. I definately recomend trying them out... then getting into their death metal stuff too (which is also, very awesome)

I posted this in another thread, but I can't seem to get enough of music when shroomin. To me it seems to make all of the difference in the world, and definitely influences the nature of the trip. Personally I like positive and spiritual trips so that's the kind of music I prefer. I tried some heavier stuff and I could just feel negative energy seething around me, wasn't pleasant for me.

The music I really love is Indian such as Tabla Beat Science, DJ Cheb I Sabbah and even the Thievery Corporation. But Acid Jazz does well too. If you are into the ethereal sounds, try Zero 7. They are pretty mellow but very layered and it just seems to really enhance the CEV for me. Some Modest Mouse songs are good because of the varied musical structure and very eclectic sounds. Not telling anyone to stay away from the death-metal scene, but for me and my two cents, the mushroom is like a sacred instrument meant for spiritual advancement, and music has a huge profound effect on us at a sub-conscious level. Studies have shown that classical music and even techno (because of it's repetitive structure) has been very beneficial for memory in rats, whereas Heavy Metal produced the worst environment for learning. Since I take the trip as a learning experience, I want to facilitate the learning as much as possible. Cheers everyone

Shpongle and Ozric Tentacles.  That's all you need.  No other artists come close to these two while tripping.  If you can make it through an entire Ozric Tentacles album while on a good dose, then you're good in my book.

Something that I don't think was listed before which I really enjoy listening to while tripping is Just Breathe by Telepopmusik, the song gives great vibes and makes you feel pretty chill tripping or not.

Other then that some of my other favorites are of course Shpongle, Infected Mushroom (Mushi Mushi rocks), Velvet Acid Christ (Fade Away is one of my favorites), Jimi Hendrix, Voyager by Daft punk, and the Flaming Lips (I love the "woooongs" in Yoshimi verses the Robots). It all really depends on what I'm in the mood for.

I feel like the only one, but I am a little dissapointed with psychedelics and music. When I first started listening to music on weed I was like "This is awesome! I bet tripping is even better!" But on shrooms and mescaline music sort of stopped being music and becomming just sound, one dimmensional sound. With the time dilation it is like I didn't even listen to it anyway, it becomes so fleeting that I just don't really feel it that deeply, like listening to music while drunk in strange way. I mean it is cool to help set my mood, but I just haven't enjoyed it as much as with weed or even sober. It was pretty cool on MDA though, but then again everything seems cool rolling.

I have found some music sucks, and some is cool. Ever since tripping one night, I have heard music completely different now. It's like I can feel bass and it somehow resonates through walls much clearer for me now. Then again I am a musician so maybe it's all relative. A few songs in particular that I really liked were:

i'm not too huge on the newest modest mouse album, but "this is a long drive for someone with nothing to think about" is bad ass.

and i agree about radiohead's kid a. "idioteque" is the trippiest IMO. i also enjoy OK Computer, it always inspires very sparkly imagery in me. amnesiac is fun tripping too.. same with hail to the thief. dunno about the first two, the bends is probably chill.

i'm a huge radiohead freak tho

Isn't Radiohead's music the best on just about ANY drug though? Both The Bends and OK Computer are great on psychedelics, because both albums are so texturized, ethereal sounding. Some of the stuff on Kid A or Hail To The Thief would be a little too intense for my shroom trips.

i dunno.. kid a is intense at times, and downright bleak sometimes as well.. but it can be warm & fuzzy, like when it goes into "treefingers".. and "in limbo" is downright psychedelic as fuck.

the last track is very chill too.. the end is really soothing.
