Fruiting Chamber

Greetings all,
I’m trying to set up a small fruiting chamber, and I would appreciate some advice, because I’m new at this, and I don’t know jack. I was/am leaning toward a SGFC, and I was all ready to buy a big plastic box. But! I found this 75 gallon aquarium, and its FREE!
Now, after reading through an assortment of posts on shroomery.org, I’ve noticed that many of you seem to be down on aquariums. I get that. But, I don’t see why I couldn’t drill some holes in the thing, fill it up with rocks, and have a beautiful high visibility SGFC that’s bigger than the plastic box that I was going to end up with.
I figure I can check to make sure that the glass isn’t tempered by borrowing some polarized sunglasses from a friend, and I can get a set of glass drill bits for about $10 (May even have one already). And, I’m sure that I will hate myself after drilling all of those holes, but it will be beautiful when I’m done. I can even drill holes in some gallon jars that I have laying around to use as oyster columns. It will be swell… maybe.
So, is there any reason why I shouldn’t buy this thing and make a neat-O SG fruiting chamber out of it?
Regards,
Rick

No reason at all not to do it, if you got the tools and time to make it into a nice sgfc

Sure, you can do it and it will work. Use perlite, not rocks. What are you going to use for the top? Plexiglass with holes drilled to match the aquarium? It's going to take a long time drilling all those holes in glass. And if you get overly ambitious you could destroythe whole thing. Good luck, do post pics when you get it done.

The aquarium ended up being tempered glass any way, and you can't drill tempered glass. The plan was to use plexiglass for the top, or one of the glass tops like they sell in pet stores. I also did some additional reading, and it sounds like maybe SGFCs don't work quite right when you make them really big--might mess with the air exchange or something.
I did find a plexiglass tank for sale. I don't really like the dimensions though. 2'H x 2'L x 1'W.

So, I eventually found an untempered aquarium. I managed to get a number of holes drilled, but the glass eventually broke when I slipped up.
This could work for a fruiting chamber, but you have to be extremely careful, so I don't recommend it. The chances of you breaking the glass before you get all of the holes drilled are really high.
If you're willing to take your time, it would make a nice looking SGFC. Plastic boxes and 4 tier greenhouses are much easier to put together though!
This is the type of bit that you need; It's a diamond impregnated 1/4" hole cutter:

Start out cutting at around 45˚ to the glass, and then work up to 90˚. You must also keep the surface of the glass wet when you're cutting. I just set a running hose next to the cutting surface.
