Will Straw/Poo's Internally Created Heat be enough?
    #2153315 - 12/02/03 11:43 PM (13 years, 7 days ago)

Is the heat generated internally from a 50/50 poo&straw medium sized Rubermaid bin (18 gal.) enough to offset a cool surrounding temperature (constant 68 degrees) required for fruiting?

They will fruit just fine in 68 degrees anyway, and the poo should bump that up a little bit, the thicker the better.

The poo/hay casing will not raise the temperature of the air around it by a degree. 68 is pretty low, IME the mushrooms grow very slowly at such low temps. It is getting hard for me to tame temps during winter.

tryu, but on the other hand, i note a marked decrease in contamination at these temps, and the airborn spore-load tends to be lower in the winter in most areas. it may just balance out.

If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

They grow a bit more slowly, but it doesn't seem to affect the yields much. I bet strains that originated in regions with cooler climates would do better though. Peurto Ricans or Mexi-cubs would probably suffer.

The temp will rise inside of the substrate.  The poo and straw will generate temps of +10 degrees.

So if your outside temp/air temp is 68 degrees, your substrate temp may be as high as 78 degrees.

In large commerical grows, substrate temp is very important and checked often.

Ever see a pile of compost giving off steam on a cold day?  Same thing but just not the same amount
