Chicksgrow, I have free form dreads and I would LOVE to try that, sounds wonderful. I'm all about home made stuff and I was gonna suggest OP to make his own hair spray stuff. It'll be much cheaper!
Anyway, yeah don't buy into the hype of products made specifically for dreads, they are shit. Anything natural with no residue works. Personally I do the baking soda and acv rinses. I add tea tree oil, sometimes other things. And I use Dr bronners bar soap on it too just for the scent. I've been doing this for about a year or two, it's cheap and effective! Incase you were wondering I wash about twice a month and my dreads turned 2 last month!

Dr. Bronners or Simple.
Mainly I just use a bicarbonate of soda mix with water and some apple cider vinegar with rosemary.

i somewhat agree with you on dread products not being the best, but when you know who's making it and you know what's going into it, it's legit. there's quite a bit of dread products out there that are really good, but there's also a lot of shitty stuff. i live in a small, crazy, hippie town in southern california so of course we have some good stuff down here

I think I'm going to make a thread in the DIY forum and post a link here after I get done with all this paper work...man I can't wait to graduate at the end of the summer, being a nurse sucks sooooo much ass.
Btw I love dr. bronners scents but they're too expensive for my cheap ass, I usually make my own castile soap but when I run out and don't have time to make it I usually use kirks just because it's cheap. I think I'm going to post one for another laundry detergent recipe too, I posted one before but it was a really basic, unscented, all natural one and the one I'm using now smells like the expensive shit.

I'm all about the home made stuff! Eventually I'll have everything that I've made myself, and I'll be using plants from my own garden.
If I didn't wash my hair as little as I do, I couldn't afford the bronners either :p
Definitely make sure you post that link, can't wait!

damn??? really? dude i've had dreads for like 3 and a half years of so and some are almost to my waste.... all are like past my mid back. how did you dread your hair? i just stopped brushing mine and it happened, so i know there's nothing in them are whatever. did you use wax or anything? although i don't really see how that would make a difference.
and on homemade soaps, i really enjoy using what i posted early. water, baking soda, tea tree oil, rosemary oil, and lavender oil. you can use different oils based on what scent you might like, but tea tree and rosemary are essential for cleaning your hair.

chicksgrowtoo said: I make a hair rinse out of tree fruits from India and I've always been curious if it would be good for dreads but nobody I've ever recommended it to has ever tried it, dreads or not. It's all natural, rinses easily, doesn't strip oils from your hair but doesn't leave a greasy look or feel either and makes your hair look awesome. People here make fun of me for using it then later ask me if I started using real shampoo because "CGT your hair looks amazing" ...they're always shocked when I tell them no I've been using the same shit you were knocking last week haha
Anyways if anyone wants to try it I'd be willing to send the dry ingredients and directions to make it if I could just have your honest opinion on it in return.
+1 send over the recipe, young cook

I use african black soap mixed with baking soda. Best I have used, bronners ended up leaving residue for me.
