I've had mine for nearly 7 years now, I wash them twice a year maybe with one of those shampoos.. in the summer I swim in the sea and in rivers... as long as you dry them properly and generally look after them they dont get ratty or smell.

My boyfriend  has dreads he's  been growing for 11 years. They are well below his ass and he is about 5'10. He uses head and shoulders bcus he has a dry scalp. Don't  know of this matters but i am assuming it does since we are talking about hair, but he is black,  so his hair is a different  texture than yours.
anyways he washes them every Saturday.
But everyday he uses a moisturizing  spray called Jamaican Mango and Lime. He also buys a jar of Jamaican Mango and Lime black castor oil and puts a few drops in the bottle and shakes it up.

He sprays this in his scalp every morning to keep it from getting dry.

The  castor oil he buys is infused with awesome stuff for your hair

The ingredients  to his spray  he uses daily are:

Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Daucus carota savita (carrot)oleoresin/canola/helianthus annuus (sunflower)seed oil, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil,Fragrance

Also he goes and gets them retwisted every couple months.
they comb out all the loose hair, and do a bunch of other shit i don't  know, and tighten the dread as well as dread the re-growth at the top of the head.

I think getting yours re-done every once in a while would prevent splitting

You can buy it at Sallys beauty supply store.
i live in Florida  its a chain store. Ever heard of it?
Get the right brand though.

It HAS TO BE "JAMAICAN  MANGO AND LIME" BRAND.
You need to get the moisturizing  spray
and the black castor oil original.  Bith are the same brand.
you can also order off amazon.

They sell it at most beauty  supply shops.
PM me and i will find one for  you in your area. And talk to u about  where you can find a place  to get your dreads re-done. For the most part, i believe  those knotty boy places do not use the correct method

That's  what im telling him. Knotty boy is bullshit.

The stuff  im recommending  is all natural, cheap and has kept my boyfriend's  4 and a half foot long dreads healthy for 11 years

There's  no specific  company that does dreads and does a good job. You're  not going to get it done at supercuts ya kno?
He gets his done by a lady he's  known all his life that has a shop on the east coast of Florida.  And another lady who i just met through getting my eyebrows  done at her salon, she ended up knowing very well how to do dreads, and now he's  been going to her so he doesn't  hsve to drive to the east coast  any more.

You just have to ask around really.

I make a hair rinse out of tree fruits from India and I've always been curious if it would be good for dreads but nobody I've ever recommended it to has ever tried it, dreads or not. It's all natural, rinses easily, doesn't strip oils from your hair but doesn't leave a greasy look or feel either and makes your hair look awesome. People here make fun of me for using it then later ask me if I started using real shampoo because "CGT your hair looks amazing" ...they're always shocked when I tell them no I've been using the same shit you were knocking last week haha

Anyways if anyone wants to try it I'd be willing to send the dry ingredients and directions to make it if I could just have your honest opinion on it in return.

I had dreads for over 6 years. Had to cut them when they got too long and started giving me headaches.

I usually made my own stuff to wash me hair. Water, baking soda, lemon juice, tea tree oil, and pachouli (for fragrance) was the best for dried skin and just cutting through the grime. I usually only washed my hair 3-4 times a year unless I was around cigarette smoke, then I would wash more than usual.

i use a bar of soap that's meant for dreads.  it works really well, lasts a long time and smells great.  you can find dread shampoo bars around or online.  you can also make your own shampoo.  all it takes is baking soda, tea tree oil, rosemary oil, and lavender oil.  that's what i did for a long time after using knotty boy products, then switched to the bar.

I was told Johnsons Baby Shampoo is excellent becasue it doesnt leave any scent/conditioner residue behind...?

I don't know how someone gets "bored" with a soap.
I use Dr. Bronners bar soap, but I also have soft water so it doesn't leave residue which I've heard happens if you use hard water.  I've been very happy with it.  Mint and Tea Tree are the two favorites.
Occasionally I use baking soda w/ apple cider vinegar rinse and it too works very well.  Couple drops of essential oils in the baking soda mix work for soothing the scalp and adding a bit of scent (though it does rinse out).
I wash every 3-4 days.  BS/ACV once a month.
