My first big monotub
    #21524927 - 04/09/15 04:28 PM (9 years, 1 month ago)

My spawn bag finally fully colonized so I decided to do a 66qt monotub. I did a mini mono but I decided to do a big one instead of a few smaller ones. So I used 50/50 coir n verm and added some gypsum. Followed the elementary coir tek using the 5 gallon bucket. Drilled the holes and cover them with electric tape. I took some pics of course.

The first picture I stole because I didn't take a picture after drilling but this is exactly how mine looked after making the holes.

All of the broken up spawn before mixing it up. I broke it up even more because there were too many big chunks.

Completely mixed in and then of course covered with the remaining 50/50.

And then the finished product.

So now it will go away and let it colonize until its time.

:super:

Question, the tape will later be replaced later to provide fae, right? Right now it's letting the substrate fully colonize, and then the fae will induce pinning?

Yes once it's fully colonized I will remove the tape and fill will polyfil to introduce fae.

:congrats: I find that monotubs are so much better and contamination resistant. There's a reason you only have to pasteurize not sterilize I'm very sure you will see great results

I dont get it...
You never sterilize a substrate before spawning in open air.
If you sterilized your sub, then you'd have to spawn in sterile conditions.
Plus sterilization kills all beneficial microbes. So your more contaminate prone, sterilizing bulk substrate.

Exactly. If you could get away with pasteurizing grains I highly doubt they would contaminate as much and you could do a lot more open air stuff, making bulk way more forgiving and easier. You'll see a lot more results on bulk and it's pretty damn hard to completely sterilize a substrate unless you pressure cook it

On a side note walk out into a pasture and poos not normally completely covered in molds unlike what would happen to a pasture of grains(lol). Poos very contam resistant and even has bacteria in it that HELPS the mycelium and will fight off other bacteria. Another good point for pasteurizing

But this is coco coir and that's way more contamination resistant than poo. Lots of people have successful grows using just tap water without any pasteurizing

This is great--I started my first monotub today also.  66 qt, following Frank's TEK.  I had 8qts of WBS spawn, kept one for future gtg, 3 I weren't completely sure of, so used the other 4.  Substrate was 6 qts field aged cow poo. 2 qts tightly packed straw (which acted like at least 4 ts), 2 qts verm, and 1 qt gypsum.  Will see how it goes.

Update: so unfortunately this was a failed mission to back to the drawing board. It was colonizing extremely slow which I didn't really pay too much attention to. I checked it today and a terrible green monster showed their face and what looks like cobweb. The colonized grain I used was suspect in the first place but I thought it may work. I may have pasteurized for too long as well. Sucks to have my first mono go to shit. Once I saw the green I took it outside and opened it up. Took some pics and buried in the backyard.
