Yeah, it was probably Glyphosate. I work in the industry and have worked in most of Melbourne's top public gardens, so I kind of know whay I'm talking about. I spend some of my time pumping mycorrhizal fungi into the ground around valuable specimen trees. Fungi is not being targeted unless it's a parasitic and effecting something of value, ie: Old Specimen trees.

That's no good man, wonder if glyphosate attacks the fruit and not the myc below? or does it all suck it up?

Glyphosate is a non-selective herbicide. This means it kills all broad leafed and grassy plants that it touches. It does nothing to mushrooms or mycelium, as far as I know or can tell, and breaks down in UV light(sunlight) in about 24 hours. Just recently it was discovered that it's a possible carcinogen, so it's unwise to eat fruits from areas that have been sprayed.
It's hard to say what herbicides do to mushrooms but seeing as some species can take up pollutants from their environment, it would seem like a good idea not to ingest species from areas that are sprayed or are in polluted areas, ie: Verges of freeways, petrol stations, etc.
The pictures above are a prime example of a public area that has been sprayed with herbicide. By law one must use an indicator die when spraying in public accessible areas. The die is either Blue or Red.

Glyphosphate has little effect on the majority of fungi, it does inhibit some and encourages others, but this may be cultural.
During a research project i did, it was identified during the literature review that Glyphosphate has a major effect on amf-mycorrhizal fungi, ie fungi in the Glomeraceae by inhbiting spore germination.
I would be very cautious about eating any fungi from areas sprayed until more research has been done on whether fungi take up the glyphosphate.

That's interesting, because when I used mushrooms heavily a few years back I would get paralysis type symptoms after the trip. After high dosages that is. The worst times were not being able to hold a spoon properly to eat food. Has anyone else experienced anything like that?

Yes its quite common, and i wouldnt necessarily blame the spray.
i have had numerous friend eat wild bush shrooms and experience the same symptoms. perhaps google it. psychedelic paralysis.

Quite a few times when trying to eat while coming down off a high dose I have had my jaw lock up and been unable to chew. Really bloody frustrating.
Also at Rainbow Serpent this year, after too much walking around my calf muscles stopped working and I was unable to walk, had to sit down in the blazing sun for a while until I recovered a bit. Freaked my missus out a bit haha.
Both of those examples are muscle paralysis brought on by actual use of the muscles. I have heard plenty of stories of people just being temporarily paralysed when sitting around in the loungerooms doing nothing, but have not experienced that myself.

Good to know. This year I'll be easing my way back into it with a very low dose.

Doesn't sound good at all TheWilf, thankfully have not experienced what you've described. Could you attribute anything else to the cause?

That really sucks, they're pretty much poisoning anyone who picks from there again. I wouldn't go anywhere near it. Glyphosate sucks!

I don't think we need a documentary about the sub-culture here in Melbourne. It won't do any services to our community.
I'm going to throw my opinion in here also, and say please do not make a documentary. Why is it whenever there is an underground culture someone has to ruin it by showing it to the masses? The last thing mushroom hunters need is more attention.

Agreed! do not want more dickheads pulling up/destroying patches, eating the wrong things, or generating the wrong interest in this subculture!
But if you do the documentary, include spraying, paralysis, mushrooms absorbing toxins, and anything else to put off people....

Education is key but there are plenty of resources out there for people to learn how to identify, pick and consume. When I first started I was studying for at least 6 months before my first season. I too would prefer to keep it under the radar.
