Graffiti?
    #21521253 - 04/08/15 07:32 PM (8 years, 11 months ago)

Art or vandalism?
A lot of people I have talked to on this subject have mix emotions, and my question for most is are you artist or a critic?
I'm just interested in seeing what people thing about street art and the culture of vandalizing for the desire of power or beauty or what ever your reason to paint is

Both. It depends, really.

I consider small random tagging kind of vandalism? But if it's creative, whether by an inexperienced artist or a master, whether on dilapidated buildings or expensive buildings, it's art, to me.

Honestly, a part of me is like, 'screw the buildings!' Most of them are not pretty and have sharp, bland, cold design and architecture, anyway. So anything that helps liven that up is a plus in my book. I also just love black artistic expression, so there's that, too.

I definitely think that as long as someone isn't seriously offended by it or if it's in a blatantly disrespectful spot that no one should be bitching. But hearing arguments against it is pretty interesting.
I would consider people who actually get mad about it dull or something, like a blank off tan colored wall is better than an artist creation?
Even in a lot of single liners I see a personal style, a flare that no one except that person can make look clean.
It's hard to describe but I think that we'll conceived/placed vandalism is a art form in itself

Ever heard of Bansky?

He's an international graffti artist with a message.
His pieces go for big amounts of money.  His art work
is sometimes removed only for the people to find out
later that it was his and worth literally millions.

Much love to Bansky.

I actually don't respect a lot of what banksy stands for in his artistic ways, he has a beautiful message most of the time but half the time he isn't even the one putting it up. Think about it, you could send anyone in the world a stencil you make and have them put it up, when I'm my ideals I think that shouldn't be done. A lot of graff and tags are like a timeline of where you were and even some pieces express the way you felt when you were there, not the way you hear things through another source. And there was a huge rivalry because banksy covered a piece by king robo in London that had been there for almost 20 years! That's just unheard of in a busy area, thing don't stay around like that.
Y'all should look up the artist SOFLES, EL MAC, And GATS
Those are three of my favorites

Political cartoons are not graffiti. Thats street art shit.

I live and breathe graffiti. If you are illegally painting a wall its vandalism plain and simple. But its art and vandalism at the same time.

Thanks for chirpen in, it seems you're more familiar with him than I. I agree, I don't know how they know which pieces are his but I still admire him. I only found out about him recently, I'll check out artists you mentioned and post some videos if any stand out.

Quote:

Banksy is probably the most well-known street artist in the world. He is as famous for his ability to hide his true identity as he is for his often-satirical murals, which usually have political and social undertones. His skillful use of stencils and dark sense of humor make Banksy's work easy to recognize. He has become a worldwide artist, creating images in unexpected international locations like the wall that has been erected between Israel and the Palestinian West Bank. His most recognizable works appear in London and other English cities such as Bristol, which is thought to be his hometown. His stencils have also popped up in American cities like Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco. Banksy's graffiti is so well known that his pieces sell at auction for up to half a million dollars, and some people have even removed walls that he has painted on so that they can put them up for sale. Banksy has sold his own work at gallery shows and auctions, though he does so through an agent to protect his anonymity

I might have exaggerated on how much his pieces go for a little, regardless.

Here's a Sofles video, haven't watched it yet but it's highly rated.

To be honest that Sofles video is a boring representation of graffiti. They are just filming artsy ass shit in a chill abandoned facility.

Id rather watch videos of people painting billboards, highway spots, streets, etc.

^^^ imo thats what graffiti is about.

What graff is all about is personal reference. I think there are way to many people that get caught up in beef and staying on top that they never realize they are not top, the guys that are on top marketed them self and took it farther than bombing and into art galleries!
Haha and to say that sofles is boring is kinda crazy to me, but once again personal reference.. And just cause some likes artsy shit and is marketing them self doesn't mean they don't still get up

Personally I'd rather look at the more complex stuff that the artist has put some thought and planning into. A lot of the hurried looking stuff is not even worth a second look.
