what would you do with a 40 acre farm?

I'm about to move onto 40 acre farm (planting zone 7) to start a legal mmj garden. we have a huge barn, horse stables, a house and a well and 2 20acre fields. we have been tossing around plenty of ideas of what to do with the rest of the property aside from the garden which will only be a fraction of the property but were not exactly sure what to do. so far we plan on turning one of the horse stables into a chicken coop for about 10-20 birds by fencing it off with chain link fence and chicken wire, building nesting boxes and hanging roosting poles. we want a big veggie garden but we not sure exactly what we're gunna grow yet. def some potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, radishes. we also want to plant a large patch of sunflowers around the fence to hide the garden a little bit from prying eyes, but we were also considering corn. so what would you do if you had this opportunity? what would you grow, what animals would you raise and how would you do it? inspire me!!

Chickens are cool. Me and my girlfriend just bought 4 chickens less than a week ago and have 16 eggs to show for it. They are pretty low maintenance, the only things you really need to worry about is keeping them very safe from predators and cleaning up after them. If you are using a stable for chickens, I bet you could get a lot more than 10-20 if you wanted to. We made a little 8 ft by 4 ft A-Frame coop for them, and it is plenty of room (they get to roam are yard as well though).

yea me and my girlfriend raised 4 chicks in her little backyard in suburban long island. on this place we could raise hundreds if we wanted but we really don't have the need for something on that scale. i just want a few egg layers and a few meat birds (whichever chicks end up being male) for me my girl and my friend living/working with us. as far as predators, we're gunna bury the fence at least a foot or two underground so nothing can get under it and then add a layer of chicken wire over the fence so the gaps are smaller. we also have two dogs that will be keeping guard 24/7.
how much did full grown chickens cost you and where did you get them from? most the places i've seen only offer chicks from a few days to two or three weeks old .

We looked on craigslist and found an add that was selling one year old hens. We contacted them, told them how many we wanted, they told us the price (usually $6 a head for 10+, but since we only got 4 it was $7 each for us), and then gave us a street name and zip code. We drove out of town about 45 minutes from where we live and found the country road they gave us out in the middle of some corn fields. 150 yards down the road was about 6 pick up trucks lined up on the right, and then a big truck with a trailer on the left.
In the end, it was pretty much an legal drug/chicken deal that was occurring right on the middle of a country road, although it felt like we were doing something illegal for the 15 minutes we sat there and waited. You sit and wait for the vehicles in front of you to load up their chickens, usually 30-50 at a time, and then when it is your turn you back you vehicle up to the trailer, provide your boxes/cages for the chickens, tell them how many you 'ordered', and then the lone chicken dealer hands you your chickens. We paid the good man and we were off on our way. It was an interesting ordeal to say the least.
We got them home and within 5 minutes of having them in the coop one of them shit out an egg, and we had 3 within an hour. It was pretty cool ha. There were a few other ads on craigslist selling adult chickens, but usually 2-5 at a time.
And we have found out chicken wire is only good for keeping chickens in, not for keeping other animals out. Raccoons can bite through it, and dogs (one of ours got in the coop with them and licked the shit out of one trembling lady) can rip through it pretty easily. They say to get hardware cloth which is a bit more expensive, but will save you some headaches down the road.

I would use a lot of the acreage as a solar farm. Then the rest for fruiting trees. If you're doing to plant your herb outside, be aware that animals like deer will probably eat it.
[edit] if you plan on raising anything in an enclosed area, be sure to dig a foot or two down before laying any fence. The extra fencing that gets buried will keep diggers out for the most part.

i wish we had the money to set up a bunch of solar panels right now but thats too big of a project for this season. we're gunna have 12ft wooden fences to keep the deer and anything or anyone else out. i really just want to grow a shit load of veggies and raise a few animals and probably get into home brewing once things slow down a little bit. i really want to get some kind of livestock aside from the chickens but i can't really decide what.

chickens make eggs, which is awesome, and they can learn tricks, which is awesome, but in large numbers, they stink, which sucks. American cockroaches however, are easy as hell to raise in a chicken coop, they don't smell like anything, you can feed them rotting garbage, and they are worth $20 per dried pound

Well, as long as they are American cockroaches, I'm game! Of course, when I start raising them they will be pets and I couldn't possibly step on them all...
For me, I was thinking ducks. The eggs are big and more nutritious than chickens. I doubt I could kill one to eat because they would be more like pets. (common theme)
Solar is in my plans, a solar powered shallow well pump, a duck pond, and hot water storage for hot tub evenings, then let it cool and drain back to the garden. I want greenhouses in the sunny spot of my property because to grow outside is basically one season. This way I can grow year round. Also you can spend as much money fencing in your garden and trying to keep the gophers away and the bugs as you would just building the greenhouse and going that route.

you don't step on them, you raise them in jars, and you just pour the jars out into a pot of boiling water. then just net the roaches out and sun dry them. Also, duck eggs are a pain in the ass, because the ducks won't lay them if they can't hide them, which means daily egg hunts

Roaches and rats are big money, idk if I could raise and slaughter them for a living though

If I had a 40 acre farm I'd sell it to a building developer then use the money to buy a bigger peice of land.

Your footings for that fence are gonna have to be big, and thats a LOT of lumber. add it up. Tall Spruce Trees can be good for peepers, but maybe burnt for that reason. Cacti called Chollas or Jumping Cactus are good at keeping animals away. ive been stuck with them and after a week or two the spines turn soft, so thats nice. On the other hand, the Maguey, or Agave americana, will impale a motherfucker. It can also be made into alcohol or pulque, but be warned: if youre going to chop some shit and you dont have entire skin protection AND a shower less than 100 yards away, you will be stinging SOOOOI BAD. like fuckin AMAZINGLY bad.
get orgone blasters and put them everywhere, grow White Sage and Ficus religiosa, grow epic amounts of psychedelics!!!! Pear trees are cold hardy, apple trees, and draw this EVERYWHERE!!!

If I had 40 acres and a bit of time on my hands, depending on the climate of where it was located, I would try my best to create some sort of a forest in it. Being able to immerse myself and friends in a private sanctuary of nature is something I've always wanted to do. I might pick a 10 or so acre area and start planting interesting trees and ferns. Depending on what sorts of plant seeds you can get your hands on and what the climate is like in your area you could have a pretty incredible, densely forested area in 10-15 years. You could even build a gazebo somewhere in this forest and plant methodically to make pathways and walkways through it.

You'll be dead long before it's a forest.

Ever looked into raising rabbits for meat? Easy as chickens and just a few rabbits can produce enough offspring to eat rabbit a couple times a week once they get going...
Other than that, if I had the money, I might dig a nice pond and stock it for fishing. Maybe even open it on the weekends for people to pay and fish for a little extra money.
Also, look into Aquaponics... You don't really need a whole lot of land for it, but if you upscaled it and were ambitious you could really raise a lot of plants and veggies and even sell them at the farmer's market or something...
-------------------- One day Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Cheshire cat in a tree. 'Which road do I take?' she asked. 'Where do you want to go?' was his response. 'I don't know', Alice answered. 'Then', said the cat, 'it doesn't matter.'
