Mushroom Kits and Spawn will be here soon!
    #21518710 - 04/08/15 09:38 AM (9 years, 1 month ago)

Hi Folks,  Enjoying the forum very much reading a lot which I like to do. In the middle of this winter I received 6 massive loads of deciduous wood chips from an arborist.  They are being spread on my landscape as the snow melts. I know some sort of mushrooms will be stimulated to grow and I would like to have a say in what comes up.  I ordered Red Stropharia winecap spawn and two indoor kits of Pleurotis ostreatus, and Hypsigus ulmarius.

I am excited to get started growing.  The winecap spawn will arrive the end of May for outdoor planting. The oysters will be here any day.  I want to fruit them indoors and eventually transfer the blocks outdoors as spawn into the wood chips.

My environment indoors is very dry 20 to 30%rH. Temps fluctuate between 60 to 78 F.  Thinking I am going to want a fruiting chamber and incubator.

I have some equipment on hand.  Rubbermaid tubs, aquarium air pump and heater, 20qt. AA pressure canner, jars, grains coir, vermiculite, peat, perlite, hydrated lime and gypsum.

I am still trying to determine a path forward here and am open to suggestions, tips, links etc.
Some things I would like to pursue are:
Take sporeprints of these mushrooms.
Make spore syringes.
Make LC's from germinated spores.
Inoculate spawn jars and bags with LC and grow out spawn.
Use grain spawn with chopped straw treated with hydrated lime to grow mushrooms indoors.

Move appropriate species outdoors.

I dont have any syringes, or lids yet and want to order some more supplies.

So thats my story, hoping the details come together in time.

With those Oyster Kits, I would try cloning mushrooms instead of using spores. Multispore germination will give you an altogether different strain of mushroom which may or may not perform very well. It's much more reliable to clone so the exact same genetics will be present in your proposed liquid culture.

Keep us posted my friend. We always love to see pictures of progress.:mushroom2:

Hey Psilocelium:-)  Is the difference between clone and spore strains a large one most of the time?  I am unsure about the ease of transferring mycelium as opposed to spores.  Hoping the syringe can make my sterile transfer easy as I want to avoid laminar flow hoods and glove boxes for now.  I am also prohibited from using the strain for commercial purposes which I might want to do at some point.  Creating my own strain would then be a plus.

Went to the post office and my kits had arrived.  Two pretty heavy blocks of sawdust fully colonized and ready to initiate pinning.  The oyster is blue which is not what I ordered.  They are in heavy duty spawn bags with at micropore patch.

They recommend temps of 16 to 20 C and cutting x's in the bag and block, then misting twice a day.  The instructions say to use a humidistat to measure humidity. No spec given just put a bowl of water out to humidify!  HAH! I think that will be insufficient in my locale.  I still think I should use a FC.  What type though.  I have a 20 gallon tote, a 20 gallon aquarium or I might buy a clear tote if I need to.  Shotgun or airpump assisted FC? Or I have a bunch of spun bonded polyester crop cover Reemay style that would breathe and raise humidity at mushroom level.  Good for keeping bugs out too.

If you want to go commercial with it, given your limitations, I would invest in a BUNCH of petri dishes and get ready for lots of transfers to isolate monocultures. It could be well worth the effort if you follow through with testing your cultures and finding the most productive.

More than likely, if you have an already pretty nice strain, the spores could produce a culture just as vigorous. It's just a matter of lots of agar work. For that you ARE going to need at least a glovebox to lessen contaminants in your work area unless you have a flowhood which is even better. If you plan on going commercial, good equipment is essential.

For those Oyster bags, yeah I would use at least a Shotgun FC, but keep in mind they need lots of FAE so any modifications to make that happen are a plus. Oysters will malform with high Co2 levels.

Took some temp and rH readings in the storeroom where I plan to fruit them. Its the only place cool enough and theres a window for fresh air. Its was 67 during the warmest part of the day and 40 % rH.

So I lined a cardboard tray with a new trash bag and put a layer of expanded clay grow rocks. I cut small x's in the bags and misted them.  Then I coverd them with crop cover fabric.  New rH is 78 at 65 F.

78% RH is decent enough to fruit oysters with some misting in between. 65 is a good temp for Blues as well. Youre on the right track my friend:wink::thumbup:

Thanks for the encouragement. Other than experience its what I need most.  Just want to have some success growing mushrooms at this point and go from there.  When I say commercial I mean I will sell any surplus I grow not that I am planning a production facility.
If I can ever figure out where to put it, I would love to have a laminar flow filtered closet.
I can see putting in a mini greenhouse shelf unit and I already have what you guys call a Martha?  Ultrasonic fogger with CPU fan in a bucket of water blowing through a 4 inch duct.  I am using it for my cannabis though.  Might have to make another.

Here are a couple pics.  RH this morning was 58 and temp was 60 F.  Misted again and covered with spun bonded polyester crop cover.http://files.shroomery.org/files/15-15/860080752-P_20150409_095837.jpg]

Ok so I have mushrooms fruiting on the Hypsygus ulmarius!  A couple of blue oyster pins forming.  I Cut the tops on the bags and added slits where clusters of fruit form.  Mist two or three times a day.  Temps 55 to 65 F.

Not sure why the blue oyster is so slow.  Wondering about casing with peat and or vermiculite?  The fabric seems to be working well but humidity is still low at points 55 to 60 % rh. It climbs to 80 to 90% rh when I mist. https://files.shroomery.org/files/15-16/921990415-P_20150415_211128.jpg]

That covering is a good idea but it still lets quite a bit of FAE which is going to battle against the RH level. A really big shotgun fruiting chamber that would comfortably fit those bags could work for helping form primordia, however, it may not be the best for fruitbody development because oysters require quite a bit of FAE to form properly.

Keep misting as often as possible with your current setup to get a better pinset.
