A Thread to Encourage Musicians to Practice * 3
    #18997617 - 10/18/13 09:27 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

"I was obliged to be industrious. Whoever is equally industrious will succeed equally well."
~ J.S. Bach

industrious |inˈdəstrēəs|
  adjective
diligent and hard-working.

Music and its creation can be rewarding emotionally and intellectually (and spiritually, if you're into that) but also is an opportunity for frustration and for succumbing to a challenge perceived as too great. To become a musician one has to start somewhere and I would like to suggest that you often remember the first day with your first instrument so that you may be aware of how far you've come and the wonderful journey you've already taken. Never be discouraged, take the road of optimism and imagination; there are no rules to music. It is about YOU and how you feel and what you want to express. If you find your practice time to be overwhelming, too hard or boring, maybe slow down and release expectation of yourself. Close your eyes and just listen to the tone of an individual note. Engage your mind with the sound and forget comparisons. ALWAYS (for me), both in listening and creating, closing my eyes allows me to connect with the music more deeply. Tell stories, have fun, make noise and jam. Make a killer riff or lively melody. Make a novel of sound.

Post your own words of encouragement for fellow music makers - we sometimes need to know the hard work is going to be worth it.

Awesome thread and I've just begin learning how to pick guitar at age 24, it's a humbling experience to say the least but so far it's rarely been frustrating, more fun than anything else however there has been a time or two that I was "UGH" but so far it's mostly been a blast.

One of the most rewarding experiences of our lives, guys, keep it up. Don't falter, stay strong and above all else, just jam and have some fucking fun!

Recording is AMAZING practice.

Get yourself a simple cheap USB jack like this:

Download or buy the software - Audacity is free, easy and simple.
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/images/Audacity-logo-r_50pct.jpg

Set up a simple click track, begin adding tracks...  Find what works for you.  I sometimes just improvise a rythm, then bass, then whatever feels right..  Keep it simple...  Just bounce one or two notes to start, maybe...  or a nice ambient organ of something to start. IT's about BUILDING.

IF I have a song in mind to practice, I lay a click track(generally) then a once through of the song(paying attention to timing accuracy and simplicity).

The idea being to learn, just keep at it.  Erase what sucks, and try something else.

I exponentially improve my timing, finesse, composition arrangement, melody, instincts and more..

I make TONNES of discoveries, sounds, tricks etc...  Listening back, you work away bad habits and can become EXTREMELY capable and confident to play with just about anyone in time.

DO IT.

I'm picking up the bass again, after about a year of not playing. I resonated with a lot of what you said. thank you, and everyone all it takes is an hour a day to get better....make your self do it for at least an hour.

Agreed. Recording can be one of the most frustrating things I do but it requires me to completely perfect my songs.

When you remove the goal of a FINISHED song...  Instead focusing on the practice it becomes much less frustrating.  I've demoed some songs 10 times or more this way.  Plus dozens of little 1-2 min tracks.  All enjoyable sessions

How often do y'all practice alone vs practicing with ppl?

I think both forma of practice are vital.

I've always got an instrument in my hands.  I play along with the tv all day and night.  I play with other most chances I get.  Couple nights a week.  Both will make you a better player.

I don't know why I wasted so much time in my life not learning an instrument.  I'm going to be disappointed if I can't hold the guitar and play something the next time I'm at a place where one is being passed around.  Would have been cooler had I started when I was still in school.

Same here, bro.

It's important to learn to play with other people more than it is o learn how to play guitar by yourself though. That's what separates a musician from a musiciant.

Guitar is the epitome instrument for musicants.

I love guitar but its bred a lot of wanna bes.

I play guitar and fiddle.

A video about the neuroscience of playing an instrument and making music. Well made, informative.

I definitely need to start practicing consistently again, and recording the improv that I play for hours every day anyway. I'd probably expand exponentially as a musician pretty quick. I just wish I had some fuckin' people to play music with, it's been way too long.
