Sourcing a type II superconductor for magnetic flux pinning
    #21517663 - 04/07/15 11:54 PM (9 years, 1 month ago)

I am curious if there is an easy way to acquire a type II superconductor from some common household item or a hardware tool or something. I know the original one was a bismuth lead alloy so what do you guys think - can I get one without having to cough up 80 euro on ebay?

You could try bismuth and lead :V

Pepto Bismol and paint chips XD

Seriously though, they have really low melting points.

Is it hard to do? I know my hotplate stirrer goes to like 500C (and I think the mp of bismuth is somewhere around 275. lead is probably less)

Sounds good I'll see if I can source some bismuth.

It's not incredibly cheap (and it is heavy) but if you're not buying a ton, who cares?

There's a place called RotoMetals that sells it, I know.
