that's not very nice, you guys
I might be a pussy, but I don't think its because I cant maintain eye-contact. Its just something I was never taught to do. I never ever was able to do it. Its not that I don't have the balls to do make eye contact...its just that I feel awkward doing it. I feel like the other person will think Im weird for doing it, when really its the opposite.

This is why certain races are less advanced as others, in terms of sub-sects of the human race. They have not made critical cross connections between their old and new brains. This is why the prison system is full of more of some than of others . . .

drege said: This phenomena is a simple yet slightly disturbing facet of our evolution, simply put you are either alpha, beta or omega in a very canine/lupine sense of the etymological use of the words.
The human brain has regions often referred to as reptilian brain, canine brain and then cerebral cortex. Simply put your cerebral cortex is the most advanced part, no other animal has one even 49% as large as a human, it is the thing that created modern civilization. The canine brain is just beneath the cerebral cortex, if you peeled it back like an onion, it is the part of the brain that governs familial values, home life and your core personality. The reptilian brain simply governs the fight or flight responses, and the need to feed, procreate and the instinct to survive - when you fear death from a mugger or being fired and possibly becoming homeless and needing to struggle to eat food and find safe warm shelter, this triggers your fight or flight response and adrenaline rush.
When you make eye contact with a stranger on public transit and neither of you look away, this is a challenge of authority, the response within seconds will be to A) look away and feign distraction (look at your phone to see the time/text message, seek movement elsewhere or yawn/clear throat B) continue staring in hopes that they look away first - then C) fight for proof dominance.
If you think not, stare you father/mother down at the dinner table, see just how uncomfortable this makes you feel, unless this parent is cuck, this will result in one or the other reaction A) your parent will look back unwavering and you will accede to your senior den alpha, or their human cerebral cortex will register this action as a cry for help and their maternal instinct will supersede their pack role instinct to keep the table of dominance in check.
What this all means is, you are an animal. you think you are better than animals because you have culture, language and vast vast near omniscient knowledge of the universe you inhabit, but at the core you are just a dumb animal - how long you maintain eye contact with others determines your role within the greater wolfpack of the human race; are you a bitch, or are you an alpha?

So would this go to say that some people brains lean more dominant towards one side? more reptilian / more canine? Maybe individuals who have a bad habit of acting on impulse? I've always found the whole reptilian brain fascinating because as evolved as we like to think we are, fuckin a we still have a lot of old animal like traits

A few months ago when I watched the whole of cosmos with Neil DeGrass tyson I was fascinated by one part about evolving, the basic gist is that the idealized concept of humans being the "evolutional height of mammals on earth" is really just a horrible pile of bug fixes and patches on antiquated systems - i,e,. our eyes secrete saline water because originally we were salt water creatures, we developed an organ to sense light/dark, then, to discern the difference between predators and prey we developed lenses, to focus on detail, then as we left the water to roam the land we needed to simulate this salt water environment that our "eyes" were developed to operate in. We are not perfect. Wanna know a perfect mammal? Camels! they are the most efficient animal that I know of in terms of physiology, look em up, they are amazing.
Couldn't find the piece from cosmos about the evolution of the eye, but this seems a second best.

I used to be like that but them I realized that if I look someone directly in the eyes and hold it, they're the ones that will look away after a few seconds. Sometimes I use this as something to boost my confidence or make it more of a dominance thing as silly as it sounds. Whenever they look away I feel like I'm more in charge of what's going on even though I'm probably not. I also just think it's funny to see how long they'll retain eye contact before looking away, like a stare-off almost. And like LittleDaddy said, instead of catching a girl's eye and then looking away I've found its much better to hold contact cause just glancing at eachother over and over again seems like a childish thing to do.

No, people love to start shit. This makes them feel better about being an agressive person. Maybe they have an alpha mentality, doesn't mean they won't get their ass beat by a "beta" lol
I feel better if i don't play their game, then they can't win. All i know is if you pride yourself on staring games with strangers, you are a lost soul. Find something better to do.

Thank you haha im suprised at how many people here do that and they think its ok. I assume they're insecure if they need to validate their dominance by mean mugging.

If someone stares at me i smile at them and look away or nod/say hello. Face to face i cycle between looking straight at them and glancing away depending on the conversation. I'm definitely much better at it the more confident i am.
