I made a mistake, need a little advice on fixing it.
    #2151227 - 12/02/03 08:13 AM (20 years, 3 months ago)

WBS was soaked for 50 hours, strained off the goop, and threw it into 6 quart jars with poly-fill filters.

Where it screwed up. Tried to get away with steam cooking them MMGG style instead of PC'ing them. Lucky a warning from the good men and women at the shroomery saved it before they wasted a syringe on them.

Now what this guy needs to now is this: Can he now pressure cook them, even though they were steamed last night for 1.5 hours? Or would that evaporate too much of the water from the WBS mixture?

It would really suck to have to re-soak WBS for another 50 hours (but they will).

I don't think PCing the jars at this point will screw them. Fractional sterilization requires 3 steaming on a period of 3 days and it doesn't really affect the moisture content.

Also, the impression I have about pressure cooker is it's cooking in a sealed environment completely oversaturated by steam. I don't think a jar can lose a lot of moisture in such a humid environment!

Pressure cook at 15 psi for 70 minutes and grow myc with these jars.

50 hours? what, were you trying to get it to ferment? 24h is long enough (even too long). WBS is cheap, i recommend starting over. you could try redoing what you have, but it'd be a risk.

spend 2 days now to save 2 months wasted later.

And yeah, Shirley is right, I forgot to mention that 50 hours is pretty long...

And she's also right with the *invest- 2- more- days-now-as-in- an-insurance-for-the-next-month* thing.

alright, well all the Teks said to soak it for 24-48 hours, and 50 wasen't but 2 more than 48.

Oh well, better now than after wasting the syringe. Bird seed was cheap.

So let's get this straight.

Soak grain for 24 hours flat.

strain off crud and load into 1 quart Kerr caning jars.

Preesure Cook for 1 hour 15 mins.
let cool till warm to the touch.

Shake throughly and let sit isn a clean place till cool.

Innoculate.

***Anything wrong with that process???****

Lemme be honnest with you. I don't have much experience with WBS. I'm currently trying it for the first time and my 11 jars are growing well. I started with popcorn and had a lot of success with it. Now I just switched to WBS to try something else.

Here's how I do it with WBS.

1- I put the WBS in a pot, cover grains with water, bring to a boil and gently simmer for 30 minutes.

2- I rinse the grains VERY WELL with a strainer.

3- I let the grains drain for at least an 1 hour in a strainer.

4- I load my jars and pressure cook at 15 PSI for at least 70 minutes.

So far, this methods seems to work really well for me. You will notice that I do not pre-soak the grain which doesn't seem to be necessary. The boiling and rinsing steps gives enough moisture to my grain (and probably a bit too much compared to optimal moisture but still working pretty good). I also use Quart jars with polyfill, just like you.

Hope this will help you out.

Oh yeah and shaking while it's still warm should help.  I forgot to do this and I had to shake a lot when it was time to inject spores.  All grains were stuck in a brick.  Thanks for the cue

Yeah the shaking was something I came 1 second from forgetting myself, but it looks like all that shaking was for not. Oh, well, already back on the horse.

I use birdseed all the time.

I always steam sterilize after letting it soak for 24 hours.

I bring the birdseed to a boil and then let it sit. I strain and wrap in a clean towel for five minutes. Pack jars and steam for one hour.

I have never had contams. I know it goes against conventional wisdom here at this site, but it has always worked fine for me.

Of course, I do a grain to grain transfer, which probably helps.Since it colonizes so damn fast.

thanks, sirreal, but I think my noobiosity prevents me from getting too chancy yet.

I guess I would just prefer to burn the day re-soaking, than take ANY chances.

Also I got a 22Qt. Pressure "Canner" has anyone ever had one of these? It goes up to 15 PSI.

If your PC is drying out jars you are either not putting enough water in the bottom, or you have the heat up to high. Once the PC is up to pressure turn the heat right down, the pressure may drop off, if so turn it back up, the pressure will settle once the whole thing has heated through. You don't want the PC howling all the time.

Actually, I had already steam cooked these for 1.5 hours, I was then going to have to Pressure cook them for another 1.25 hours. The heat of both cookings combined was going to dry them out a little, not just the pressure cook.

Yeah, better safe than sorry.

You are doing a spore innoculation anyways,so it is probably better to pressure cook them.

You got one anyway, so what the hell, right.

good luck, buddy.
