What's the least amount of money one could move to a new city with?
    #21499291 - 04/04/15 01:31 AM (9 years, 1 month ago)

Say you were to move to a new city and needed enough money to survive for a month before you csn get a job and allow time for paychecks to start coming in. if you were to move into a cheap apartment in a less than nice part of town, and lived really frugally, like ramen noodles for a mmonth, what is the least amount of money you think one would need to live for a month?

$3.50 tree fiddy.

Hard question to answer. Not enough variables to answer.

Like what are you taking with you?

Do you have a car? If not how are you getting there?

Time of year?

Utilities paid?

Storage?

Parking?

If you were just going with bare minimum with utilities paid and rent I'd say between $50 and $100.

That's in the hope you find work that month. It could take up to 4 weeks to get your first paycheck

keeping track of your money is an essential skill and if you can't build a budget you probably aren't ready to leave your parent's house.

For me personally, it would be close to $2000.

Rent is near $500 for a shit apartment in my town, plus $250 for damage deposit. Most your utilities have like $50 hookup fees. If you are going for cheap, you might only need power.

So thats $800 before you have even stepped foot in the door.

You probably have a cell phone with a data plan at another $50 or $75.

Food can go for $100 a week if you are eating vegetables and somewhat healthy, but anything less than $200 a month is really scraping by.

So thats $1150 before any entertainment, weed, or drinking. $1500 would probably do it, but I drink a substantial amount.

I'm guessing you would need to buy a pot, some cutlery, and other fridge junk, probably a toaster and some plates and bowls.

Ya, $1500 or better likely. Best of luck young grasshopper.

A cheap used mattress (gross) might be $50 or less, maybe $100 delivered. Better if you get your current one, but I'm assuming that you are more or less running away from home with a backpack. An ok air mattress might be less, but your body will feel it after more than a few nights on those. Bedding, towels, pillows is good to take, but you need shampoo, dishsoap and all that junk.

The 10lb potato bags are your friends. You can cook potatoes a dozen different ways and for every meal, plus you can put on some decent mass if you are working out. Exercise pairs well with poverty.

I will hopefully be moving in late Summer, snd yes I'll be taking my car with me. I have found some shit apartments in the area I'm looking at for about $400. I'll probably just bring an air mattress and use craigslist to find cheap/free furniture people are getting rid of.

Stock up on everything you need first. Toiletries, food, booze, bud. Everything you'll need to get by it'll make it a lot easier not having to buy that stuff the first month.
Pay your insurance up to
Have money for deposit and utilities.

If money's real tight you can sleep in your car at Walmart for a bit and just shower at a gym or truck stop

save up for furniture before you move.  it is much harder after you are on your own.  funky couches on side of the road start looking good.

Im really looking into the southwest. Specifically Arizona and New Mexico. I've seen some cheap apartments on craigslist for Tucson, as well as in Albuquerque. Anyone have experience with these cities?

Find a job before you look for an apartment. Housing is easier than jobs.

Anyone have any experience living out of a car, or living outdoors, like in a tent?

Albuquerque - average IQ of the general population is around 4.

But, from what I understand, New Mexico law is mushroom friendly.

not so bad if you have to do it, but not optimal.  its best if you have a way to make it look like noone is sleeping in there.  crack the window just a bit so they don't fog up.  LOCK YOUR DOORS. i have made this mistake and woken up to a baseball bat to the face to show for it.  If you are in a tent, hide your campsite.  don't burn a big fire.  you can hide your fire a bit and make it burn with less smoke by digging 2 holes next to each other about 18 inches deep, and connecting them at the bottom with a horizontal tunnel, then you make your fire on one side, and it draws air from the other side. i think its called a dakota fire or some such.  it acts kinda like a rocket stove.  main thing if you have to live outdoors or in a car is to keep a low profile so you don't become a target for cops or robbers.  You should especially watch out for cops in Albuquerque, because i'm pretty sure they gun people down all the time.
