Growing tension
    #2149261 - 12/01/03 11:43 AM (20 years, 3 months ago)

The tension between Europe and the US is slowly building up. First the whole steel issue, then Iraq, and now this:

I'm beginning to think that the planned EU military force is a very good idea. Of course, the US will battle it fiercly, but I believe they've just tipped the scales irreversibly.

I think this is the reason the US is opposed to the Galileo system.

Yes, but they have been very vocal about it since the idea was first launched. "There is no need for a system seperate to GPS" have been their mantra.

The idea of Galileo is to make global positioning usable by those services which fear using GPS since it is under US military control and might thus be turned off at the slightest whim.

I think the Europeans are wasting their money.

It's their's to waste however and I can't say I blame them for wanting an independent system.

What would you do if you lived in Europe? Would you want to rely on the U.S.?

I already answered that, but to be more clear.....
1. Depend on the US.
2. Could, but wouldn't. (the personal responsibility thing I'm so fond of)
