Red Reishi?
    #2149239 - 12/01/03 01:34 PM (13 years, 5 days ago)

As I was walking through some woods in Maine this weekend, I stumbled across some kind of decaying stump (not pine) with all of these vibrant red, rather tough/durable mushrooms. I din't have my camera at the time so I took a sample, and here are a couple of pictures. Hopefully someone can give me a definite ID on these attractive looking mushrooms that are probably red reishi of the gonoderma lucinda species (after googling it up for a while).

A definitive ID only by judging a photo is impossible.

BUT to 99% I?d say it?s Ganoderma lucidum.

As always, we suggest that you ingest the speciment to confirm it's edibility.... j/k.

Seems I recall (GGMM?) a method employed to preserve reishi, the stipe only types specifically. Personally, I'd consider doing this to such a beautiful find. I'd save ingestion for the homegrown variety.

They truly are very valuable as medicinals. Although herbal medicine has declined somewhat in China, when i was there they were revered and respected as a great gift of nature. I've even read that some Chinese scholars believe that lingzhi, the legendary plant/elixir of immortality, was thought to either be this mushroom or contain it. peace
