The third pic is suspicious but I swear it is just the haze of the prior label that was removed.

It looks like you got a decent amount of burst kernels in there too.

Here I got some better pics of this jar. All the pictures are of the same jar, I just rotated to show the even growth of the mycelium around the entire circumference of the substrate. The small brown blobs you see are whole rice grains, I hope that is what you see as suspicious and not something else bad that I am missing. I hope these are easier to see. The label residue gives the jar a haze but I am pretty sure the myc is happy.

I get the cardboard wet then I place it in a bowl and microwave a minute and if it is not dry I put it back in for another 30 seconds. Once it is dry I wet it again then place it back in the microwave for another thirty so that it only dry's til damp wet. How wet the cardboard is is mighty important, less is more, in my opinion but still some. I have a few slits lagging because they are too wet. The jar of substrate in the picture above was sterilized in the PC but the cardboard was not in these posts. 2 out of the 3 jars contaminated, but this jar is doing fine so far. Running like hell.

This is an awesome post. After years of lurking around here I'm still seeing things on here that blow my mind. Good job man, and props for trying something new.(to me at least)

The contaminated jar is fruiting too, I'll get pics up later. The mycelium from the stem is seriously tough it nearly ate all the contaminated area before fruiting. Once the 1/2 pint get's done colonizing I believe the fruits will be nice. Those two shrooms in the pic started growing outward to days after I broke up the cake almost no recovery time!

Thanks, I'm still having to work out the contamination factor but the project is exciting! Super simple too.
