UPDATE: Pin in jar/ possible contamination
    #21477663 - 03/30/15 06:59 AM (9 years, 1 month ago)

I have a jar I've been photographing for a gif and it started pinning but still isn't fully colonized.

I was planning on mixing it with 5 other jars and coir for a monotub but now I think I should fruit this one separately. None of the other jars are pinning.

How should I proceed with this jar? I plan on keeping it closed a few more days for photographs

I would keep it separate from ones I felt were healthy.

Do you notice any off (non mushroom) smells?  Has growth stalled?  From what I've read here, pinning before full colonization may signal contamination and so you may not want to mix with the healthy ones but you better wait for the experts to chime in...

Good luck regardless of how you choose to proceed :mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2:

Ive seen jars pin without being fully colonized or contaminated. Unless there is a visible contamination I would just let it sit and see if the rest colonizes and if you still have any doubt then crumble it in your garden and watch nature take its course.

So that pin is now 4 times larger and I am seeing others as well. In fact, now I notice that 2 more jars that aren't colonized are pinning as well. I think I am going to try to fruit these just by taking the lid off.

I have 3 jars that are fully colonized and not pinning, is there any chance I can make a full sub for a 66qt mono? with coir of course

Yea its just dark, the mycelium looks fine. That jar and 2 others have stalled while 3 jars managed to fully colonize.

My bad, yea all 3 on the bottom, about a quarter or 50 cent piece size left uncolonized

once those start pinning or knotting just fruit them. wash off the uncolonized parts under the faucet.
probably just got too compact.

Can I still mix all 6 of them with coir into a monotub?

UPDATE

It has looked like this for 10 days.

This pin is growing pretty quickly

These three jars stalled. 3 others that were inoculated the same day are ready to go to coir today.

if its pinning just birth it. wash/rinse off the uncolonized parts.
your probably compacted the brf+verm mix a bit or made it slightly wet so it got compacted at the bottom.

Is it safe to mix these 3 stalled ones with 3 fully colonized ones with pasteurized coir for a monotub?

Or should I just use the 3 fully colonized ones?

if you can get all the uncolonized parts off I see no dangers. 3 cakes is not enough for a monotub, more like a tray or shoebox size maybe dub-tub thing.

So I should just cut away the uncolonized parts? That seems easy, never thought about that.
You are probably right about both water content and compaction also.

I wouldn't cut, just rinse. maybe you need to poke at it at the same time to get it off. but dont go cutting into mycel, just use the tip of a butter knife or something.

So scratch away brf/verm until I reach mycelium? ok, I wouldn't have thought of that, sounds good, thanks!

rinsing should be enough, but if needed, yeah. once you birth it mold spores
in the air will hit the uncolonized parts and have a feast, so best get those parts off.
the colonized parts are already taken over by myc and healthy myc can fend for it self!
