Fruiting problem brf. Is light the issue? With pics
    #21482441 - 03/31/15 07:53 AM (9 years, 1 month ago)

I’ve been reading everything on here for several months now & thought my first grow would go smoothly, but I was wrong. I started off with 11 brf 1/2 pint (short) jars & expected to lose a couple since it was my first time. I was impressed that none showed any signs of contamination. One jar colonized way faster than the others. I let it sit for an extra week then made a small SGFC (8”x16”w by 14”h) to perfect specs (1/4” holes 2” grid w/5” wet coarse perlite & sitting in the middle of my bedroom). I dunked for 24hrs & rolled in vermiculite.  I misted & fanned 2-3x a day and temperature varied from 68 min-75 max. After a week, nothing was happening & the other cakes were ready to birth.

Of the 10 remaining cakes, I birthed 5 more, dunked & rolled. I figured maybe they were slow consolidating because they were ms injection & I’d let the other 5 sit for another week. Keep the same schedule of fanning & misting. After a couple days the cakes started bruising blue. I don’t think it’s the misting since it’s a very fine spray & I don’t spray directly at the cakes. I gave it a couple more days & bought a bigger tub thinking maybe it was a FAE issue. It is made exactly to spec as well & the hygrometer is showing a constant humidity of 96%. The remaining 5 cakes started pinning in the jar, so I birthed, dunked & rolled those.

It has been a full week since the pinning cakes were birthed & they aren’t growing at all. 2 weeks since the other 5 cakes were birthed & there are no pins on those. 3 weeks since the first cake was birthed & there are no pins on it either. The bruising appears to have stopped at least.

I know this topic is discussed all the time. I've read every one & feel like I'm not making any stupid noob mistakes. I’m feeling really frustrated. The only uncontrolled variable is the light. I have 3 large windows & my room gets very bright during the day but the SGFC is not getting direct sunlight. Could the light be the reason I’m not getting anything to grow? I can post pics of my setup tonight if it helps.

Patience is the key in this hobby my friend. Light is not the problem (unless you have them in direct sunlight, which is not the case), mushies can grow in complete darkness.

I advise you to keep waiting. If you do not see anything after 2,5 weeks you should worry

-once pinning starts you should stop misting directly on the cakes

ye post some pics! of your fc, grow room, and the "bluish" cakes u speak of. that will help to figure out ur issue tremendously. cus the sound of it, u doing everything correct.
also i assume u have curtains on them windows? cus u dont want TOO much light. and do u only rely on sunlight stricktly for light source?

o and how much to u mist? like, dont drench them babies! i mist 13 times for good luck and fan hard 26 times cus im OCD..:crazy2:

happy luck! hopefully them babies will start poppin sooon!:mushroomtwirl:

Thanks! I'll post some pics as soon as I get home. I worried about opening it too much & screwing up the humidity. I'm super OCD so I have to stop myself from going overboard.

Mushies can handle a broad range of relative humidity. I believe if you're above 65% you'll be fine

You can see the old cakes are smaller & have blue bruising. The old ones have been have been in there for 2.5 weeks. Are they dead?

This is old information. You can directly mist cakes with pins and fruits it will not affect them.

I'd laugh if it was PE or APE and that was the whole issue.
