Football and Philosophy...

A determinist is the causal equivalent of a Monday morning quarterback. Hope comes in the form of a "Hail Mary" pass. The referees are the Illuminati (more or less). The announcers are the various mental voices running through our heads (and, yes, John Madden is Satan - albeit a fat Satan). ... {keep it going} ...

determinists are (according to their own worldview), cheerleaders standing on the sidelines... watching the action, but playing no part in the outcome...

i thought determinism was the belief that all things are 'predetermined' and that what happens can be explained (for the most part) through logic. i wouldnt really consider determinists to be 'playing no part in the outcome,' as the outcome is the result of all happenings, major or minor. this includes someone just 'watching the action,' like a cheerleader.

yeah I guess they do "play" a part, but they can't actually change or affect the outcome. the winner of the game has been predetermined long before a single player steps onto the field. so if you can't affect the outcome, you might as well be a cheerleader.

it seems we've got different ideas about what determinism is. my understanding is that all things are (pre)determined by the events that lead up to the present. i dont believe that the concept eliminates one's effect on the outcome but rather emphasizes personal importance and the effect one can have on this outcome.
it seems that a world based on determinism is often misinterpreted as a world that would be filled with apathy, however, imo, determinism is more supportive of individual ideas/actions than it is destructive......class time

Ah... you're a "soft" determinist then... maybe even a compatibilist?
Whatever the situation... no one has attempted to play ball. Are football analogies really that hard to come up with?

The seemingly "against- the- odds" touchdown play is like a well thought-out synchronicity, where every member of the team was in sync.. AKA-in the right place at the right time. [ No wonder they scored... They had a great coach!!! What a coincidence!! ] >>> But ask the team how they did it... They won't really know... Maybe they'd call it a miracle.
If The announcers are the various mental voices running through our heads ... then, the crowd is the greater connection with which the mental voices interact with... The announcers are there for the observing crowd... If it wasn't for the crowd, there'd be no need for announcers... Like consciousness and subconsciousness...

And the Football itself, represents the love, the greed, the materialism, the possiveness, the passion, power that drives everybody to fight for it, as they can only reach their ultimate goal...the success of life in the form of a touchdown, with the football. Without the football and all that it represents, you can't make a touchdown.
