Removing uncolonized seed from jars and casing
    #2148187 - 12/01/03 01:14 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

I have 2 quart jars that have been colonizing for over around a month. There are a few grains of seed that dont want to finish colonzing. Air exchange is adequate. I think that water content was off. They are in an incubator.

I want to break the cakes up and pick out all of the seed that isnt colonized on the bottom outsides of my jars. In theory wouldnt this be ok? I mean ONLY chunks of mycellium would be cased so there is no chance for contams right?

A few individual seeds? If it has been a month and it's just a few seeds here and there then it's probably ready to go. The seeds pressed against the glass usually don't look colonized but the mycelium should have a strong foothold on them. Grain isn't like a pf cake where it's completely covered in white. Sometimes the grains are still visible. Don't pick them out. Just case and you should be fine.

Damn, I guess i was being anal when I heard people say "100% colonized".  I figured they meant totally white with every spec of grain colonzied.  I'll be casing soon.

Yeah, you'll probably be okay...

I would take out the uncolonized and throw it away.

45% sounds too thin. The only seeds that shouldn't necissarily be colonized are the ones pressed tightly against the glass. The mycelium should be very thick everywhere else.
