Ok Fruiting Chamber?? (I'm new)
    #21481219 - 03/30/15 09:32 PM (9 years, 1 month ago)

So I am trying my first grow and I wanted to try a fruiting chamber that I have found online (see link) , but the more I research the more everyone screams SGFC!!!!! I feel like my set up would give plenty of FAE and keep up the humidity, so I don;t see the problem. Should I just drill holes in it and call it good, or will this be ok? I just don't see a huge problem with this...

Please don't tell me to not get the pump and everything because I already have it (I know its not necessary but I don't mind the easy air flow and humidity, can't hurt can it?)

Yea, youre gunna hate me but scrap those plans, buy a plastic tote and a bag of perlite. Everyone says SGFC cause half of us have tried to build contraptions like this and wish we could go back in time and undo the time spent on it

A SGFC is designed to use mimimal maitinence. You litterally just have tp give a good mist and a fan 3 x a day. All these automated fruiting chambers have fallen out of fashion because they are sub par compared to the tried and true SGFC

Fanning doesnt provide FAE, neither does pumping air in. In fact, your mushrooms would prefer to be fruited out in the open air where they have as much FAE as they can get. And you can do that, but your substrate will dry out and lose humidity to the emvironmemt quicker unless you are there to mist enough, more work.

So a SGFC provides a compromise, its designed to provide as much FAE as possible while still holding in humidity long enough that you only have to mist 3 times a day.

The fanning is done after you mist to stimulate evaporation off the substrate

Yeah man. Use the air pump for an aquarium. They have no use in mushroom cultivation. A SGFC is cheap, easy, and effective. Why make it more difficult than it has to be?

Damn I did so much research!!!! I should have just went with the simple SGFC... and I will now. I have everything, just need to drill holes in it. This could have been A LOT cheaper. Dang, I just got excited when I saw that setup and thought it would work great. Oh well, first time. Won't make that mistake again. Thanks everyone!

Go straight to monotubs. I started with the SGFC and havent used it since I made my first mono.

Also, no part of your design is going to work like you are expecting it to. Just use a SGFC or a monotub and you'll do fine.

Yeah I was in the same boat as you before when I first tried cultivation, based everything off of the outdated MMGG. It worked, but was less that desirable for the amount of work and money put in to it.
The SGFC is easy to make, 1/4" holes in a grid pattern with 2" spacing between 'em on all 6 sides. 3-5" of well drained perlite (keep it loose and airy). Make sure you elevate it off of the table/shelf as air must enter from the bottom in order to achieve the convection currents. I still recommend misting and fanning several times daily, as evaporation of moisture from the substrate is a major pinning trigger and that moisture must be replaced by misting. Fan after misting for 10 seconds or so. Get a CFL bulb which has a color temperature of 6500K or greater (daylight rated). Also, do not run a fan in the room the SGFC is in, as it will mess with the convection currents that the FC created. Good luck and happy harvests!

I also spent a lot of money trying to reinvent the wheel when I started. Not worth it man.

Sorry man

There is a place for humidifyers and that is im automated home greenhouses nicknamed "marthas" in this hobby

When I first started I was trying to grow like 70 cakes at once. I had several SGFCs running at once to fit them all and it really was a huge pain in the arse to mist and fan for 5 minutes straight

If youre just growing cakes then build an SGFC. Once you move to bulk substrate it actually gets easier if you build monotubs

Six holes stuffed with polyfil and youre done. No misting no fanning you can stack them, I fruit 15 at a time. The most you have to do is adjust the polyfill every once in a while
