If your currency is pegged to Gold you can’t affect its price by changing the money supply (buying and selling bonds). The current philosophy is to lower interest rates when the economy is stagnating to encourage spending, and raise them when the economy is doing well to prevent runaway inflation.
wow this has really worked great hasn't it? By the way, in the mid 1970's there was a stagnating economy AND inflation. what did it take to correct it? (It was called 'stagflation')
The term is actually stagflation. Why wouldn’t you just say that During your time they didn’t think that could happen, and were pretty blown away by it. I actually don’t know what corrected it but I’m sure you are about to say some retarded Reaganite shit. Im not a free-marketeer by any means, I would assume you are though (being the republican in the discussion). The thing about Economists are, they think that there is a perfect equation to explain everything and always state “it will never happen again” but it always does because Economics isn’t a hard science and there will always be risk involved. The idea of being successful in finance is mitigating risk. I read something once like, Economics uses an elaborate layer of beautiful and pristine Mathematics that to the untrained eye it would appear like a hard science, however when the Mathematics are peeled back its no more “hard” than Psychology. Not saying i really agree or disagree just something to think about.
The 70s were long enough ago that i dont know about the period, but not long enough for me to care about it. Boring ass decade really. Pre-Iraq, buncha crazy terrorist shit, some good music but a lot of shitty music that is looked upon as being good purely from nostalgia. Oh and all the fucked up parts of Foreign Policy have their roots in the 70’s. I think Apple started in ’76 though

What fixed it was raising interest rates. The claim is that 'supply side inflation' caused the stagflation in the 70's....due mainly to the oil price gouge. But why did that occur?
I find it odd that when the US went off the gold standard, the 'Nixon Shock' brought about in 1971 was the year that prices started skyrocketing and jobs became scarce.
Were the oil price rises the result of the dollar being disconnected from gold?

Inflation has been incredibly stable since the Federal Reserve Reform Act of 1977 was passed. Gold, on the other hand, has crashed hard since 2011.

Opec. Stagflation would really suck.

Reagan.
The worst economic policy in the history of America.
Lets sell crack to poor minorities to buy weapons, that we can sell to Iran for more money, in order to support good capitalists in their pursuit to make more cocaine!
Worst president ever, hands down. Like Harding bad.

Amazing.

actually exchanging a service for a good is a barter economy. Definitely not even close to a handout.
Also pretty sure this is flaming.

Well since you want to get all serious.
1. Its entirely illegal, every bit of it. 2. Its a worthless service for a worthless product that provides nothing in terms of utility. 3. it was a joke.
Welfare is a barter exchange too. The Government supplements the citizens income in exchange for being a citizen. “Barter" and “Handout" are not mutually exclusive, it comes down to a mater of opinion.

It should only be used when the economy is struggling. Which it was when Reagan first tried it. But it was so successful, he didn't stop, and our debt is hurting us all today.

Getting back on topic here, latest RCP polls for both party nominations.
For Republicans, there's a split at 16.6 between Bush and Walker. *shudder*
And the Dems are still, unfortunately, dead set on Hillary at 57.7, with Biden and Warren in the distance, both at 12.
What surprises me the most about those numbers is the seemingly deliberate repudiation of Ted Cruz (4%). Obviously things will begin to swing more drastically as fall approaches, who do you see falling/rising, and why?

there is also time for Obama to drive the final nails in the coffin of the democratic party with stupid, mindless executive action and drive swing independents to the right.
But in the end, i don't think it matters. We are a country of destiny. It's gonna be Dumb and Dumber--Jeb and Billary--and we are going to end up with one of the Royal Family in office for 8 years.
