Not Sending Not Receiving
    #2147506 - 11/30/03 05:55 PM (20 years, 4 months ago)

I got my new router up and running, just sharing it too three computers and one laptop..

anyways the problem is that the computer in my room which is freshly formatted running nice and fast and smooth like butter isn't receiving or sending anything...(winxp)

so just to make sure that cable was getting a signal i plugged it into my laptop and i'm on it now and it's working fine....

make sure its getting an IP (if using DHCP) or has one set (if not)

run 'ipconfig' from the command prompt

If its getting an ip, check to see if the gateway and subnet mask is set correctly. (this info will all come from the ipconfig command)

If the gateway is set, try pinging it. 'ping gatway_ip' from the command line.

Try those steps first then we'll check some other things.

The "gateway ip" is should be the ip address of the local area interface on the router that will route packets from your machine to the next hop on the wide area network. In other words, when your computer wants to talk to somebody else on the internet, it communicates through the gateway (router).

From start->run->cmd, type: ping IP_ADDR where IP_ADDR is the gateway ip from ipconfig. If you get timeouts, then your computer is not talking to the router. If you do not get timeouts (4 packets sent, 4 packets received), then you probably have DNS issues as a first guess.

>and default gateway with nothig...

Goto one of your machines that is working and look at the property sheet for the network interface (control panel -> network interfaces - IIRC) and see if they "Obtain an IP automaticly" or have one set.  Then make sure the problem machine is configured the same way.  It seems to me that the rest are using dhcp whereas this one is useing a set IP.  You could also just try going to the command prompt and typing 'ipconfig /renew'

And heres a little digram from seuss description of gateway:
your machines -> (internal interface) gateway (external interface) -> internet

forgive my spelling i just woke up

That's the problem, i tried (on the problem machine)
cmd->ipconfig/renew but it timed out....

It's also set to IP automaticaly... also, the NIC seems to be working, because when i pull up the network connections, it gives me the duration of time i've been 'connected'....just not sending nor receiving

Nah, that is just the time that the OS thinks the card has been working. Doesn't mean the card has been working, just that the OS thinks it is... not saying that this is a hardware issue, but rather that you can't trust what the OS says to mean anything.

99% of all network problems are in the wires. Try a different patch cable between your machine and the switch/hub/router. If that doesn't help, try plugging into a different port on the switch/hub/router.

You might also try an ipconfig /release, before you do the ipconfig /renew, though I doubt it will make a difference.

Finally, try swapping out NICs between a machine that works and one that doesn't.... Brainstorming... do you have to enable the MAC address of the NIC in the router for DHCP? Do you have a free DHCP address to allocate in the router? This could be a router/DHCP server configuration issue as well.

well the weird thing is i've covered all area's of what you've suggested..

Ipconfig/release worked, ipconfig/renew timed out..

the cable works, because i'm here Right Now, with the same cable that was plugged into the problem pc..

so i'm left to believe it's either the NIC, which is unlikely because the day before i started this thread, it was working, and i havent unistalled, installed or changed anything...

so i'm leaning towards the fact that i went IPCONFIG/RELEASE and tried to renew it but it timed out?

get all the ip information from a working system and try putting the info in manually.

Use the same subnet mask and gateway but a different ip within the same subnet. (add one to the last number should do it)

Im startung to think you need to tell the router its ok for that system to recieve an ip.

reboot the router/dhcp server and see if that helps
