Is China a paper tiger?
    #21478005 - 03/30/15 09:31 AM (9 years, 1 month ago)

There's no question China was poor in 1990 (or even 2000) compared to now, but do you think the numbers from China are trustworthy? Also, has it trickled down to everyone in China or is it only a small minority of people who have benefited?

How does the life of an average Chinese person compare - is it most comparable to India, America, Latin America or western Europe?

At my school there are tons of recently arrived mainland Chinese students with moderately wealthy parents (paying a lot more than the domestic students do), and even a handful with extremely wealthy parents driving Rolls Royce and Bugatti and so on. This leads me to believe that people at least as wealthy as the middle class here are probably not really a rarity there.

Also, just look at the proportion of consumer products we use that come from there. It's not only the cheap substandard stuff either any more, shit geared more at a luxury market (Apple etc) is made there too. If anything it seems like the on-paper deception is that the value of their currency keeps getting suppressed to keep prices low.

China manipulates it's currency tremendously in order to continue its position in the consumer goods market.  They also have absolutely zero concerns about pollution.

None of the above.  I suspect it is much closer to a middle of the road African shitocracy for most poeple.  Some connected people are getting rich.  Some chosen students are coddled and encouraged.  The vast majority are utterly fucked.

Zero concern for the environment?

http://www.hindustantimes.com/world-news/china-to-set-aside-500-billion-to-clean-up-environment/article1-1099827.aspx

They saved up 500 billion to clean up their act. That's more than absoluteely every other country on earth.

They do cheat their currency.

All and all, China is an aritficially sustained soap bubble that will pop eventually.

When I was there last December it appeared as if the majority of people were doing okay in the cities. The thing is there are so many jobs associated with building stuff. China is building so much so fast it's incredible. I can't imagine what would happen if China stopped building at this rate.

I was there for research, it was a quick trip but got out to some cool wetland areas of south China, Jiangxi province. The countryside is definitely very poor but the cities seemed to have a sizable middle class. Although I don't really know much beyond what I saw

Yeah, from talking with Chinese students, I got this impression as well.
They can talk on & on about their lives, but when you ask about working class people or farmers, they have no idea what kind of lives those people are leading.

The term shitocracy for these types of deals, however, is fucking brilliant.

Yea the air is horrible. I had a headache the entire time I was there. I remember fantasizing about how awesome the air is going to be when I get home.

The air must of had something in it. 32 worlds records were broken during these olympics.

I assume that 500 billion will be used eventually on something worthwhile. Then again they keep on building skyscrapers the worst possible way they can. They dont have time to plan intelligentely, there's too much demand.
