Animation?
    #2147207 - 11/30/03 04:06 PM (20 years, 4 months ago)

Anyone here ever done any?
I'm getting started in doing some simple cartoons, and it'd be cool to find some collaborators.
I've been using Flash 5.

well flash is pretty easy to use.. ive done a bunch of flash ( never really wanted to do cartoons )..

actionscript is basically just a programming language and can greatly help doing the animation, but w/e.

btw id suggest flash mx instead, much better layout, plus improved features, user-friendliness, and stuff.....

i wouldnt mind being a collaborator, but ive got a bunch of stuff do do first, so not this month ( well towards the end would be perfect too )

Yeah, flash is really simple.
The challenging and tedious part is doing all the drawing. You can make very complex and detailed animation in Flash, if you're willing to work at it.

true, but doing it in photoshop is faster
just trace the bitmap and break it up

im just starting to get into it as well. Ive been using after effects and photoshop and so far the results have been really good. the possibilities are endless...how exciting indeed

"true, but doing it in photoshop is faster

Not if you're animating a character frame by frame.
I suppose Photoshop + Premiere would be pretty good for that.

hmm
if youre animating frame by frame it would look best w/ photoshop, edit the characters within flash once its broken up

use the onion skin option to line everything up.....

but if you're worried about space, then yeah, within flash is fine, but it does have limitations w/ graphics
oh well

tons of stuff looks great in flash..

oh yeah, check out "booty dance" and all versions on newgrounds.com, someone imported from a movie frame by frame, using the trace bitmap option. how tedious, but it looks great

You should check out flash mx, its interface feels a lot more like it was written by adobe than marcomedia, and thats a very good thing

Also, be sure to check out www.flashkit.com
the flash mecca.

I'm sure I could probably make it look better if I did the individual frames within Photoshop or something but it's tedious enough as it is. I'm going to finish the project I'm doing now within Flash entirely, and then maybe for the next thing I do I'll focus more on details.

I'll give MX a try pretty soon. I should try to get a legal copy for Christmas or something.

you could try it out for a month free first...
they offer a demo

also, how long have you been using flash 5? Have you gotten into hand-typing code at all? It could save alot of trouble w/ animation in some respects

Well, I could just download it for free as well...

I've got a decent amount of programming experience in C, and various other languages... how does the ActionScripting stuff work in relation animation?

I haven't been using Flash for that long, but I learn these things pretty quickly.

well you can use loops and junk to create motion tweens and do stuff on the fly, sort of...
if you want any sort of interactivity, youre better off sticking with actionscript

you can have one movie clip, and then duplicate it and change a huge number of properties ( alpha, rotation, x and y position, name- this is important with duplicates, color, etc ) and if you have it set so the property is adjusted using += on one frame, but then the next frame tells it to go back to the last frame w/ the conditional += , you can do stuff like have a gradual motion tween ( you could use Math functions to define a path, i guess ) which is based on a bunch of variables...

eh... hope i havent confused you yet. Basically, actionscript is a programming language which is action-based and you can use on movie clips... for practical application, you can just use it to set the properties of movie clips in some tweens, manually make a tween w/ actionscript which makes a movie clip larger or smaller as it goes along... may not seem worth it, but motion and shape tweens aren't too comprehensive in themselves.

oh, important w/ actionscript: naming objects
like, give an object an insance name blahh or whatever you want

in c(++) you have classes and functions and all variables have scope.. in flash, i dont believe anything like a class exists- it makes programming very confusing at times.. you can have functions and the variables have scope ( not all global .. how horrible that would be)
to access a variable on the main timeline it's either just the variable, var1. or _root.var1, which is more precise..
within movie clips, you need to use the _root structure...

theres also _parent which is the movie clip that something is nested within ...

blah if you get into actionscript and ever need help i'll try to help.. for now i guess just try to use it in little ways to get used to it.. maybe make custom cursors or something.. that just uses mouseHide() and a dragging function..

Ah, I understand.

So far I've just been animating things pretty much frame by frame, combined with a few motion tweens.

I just spent two hours animating a really simple cartoon bird, and I'm nowhere near finished.

That's what I have so far on this. A friend of mine is working on the sound.

I need to go over a lot of it and touch it up, but I'm nowhere near finished.

I would love to work with anyone who is willing to put long hours and dedication into a crazy-weird animated short. Intent would be for distribution over the web for free...DVD for sale...and for festivals. Character development would lead to a marketing strategy for stickers....concert flyers?....t-shirts. Would be done with After-Effects & / or Flash.

Check out some art and animation samples at the below URL's:

I'd definately be interested in working with you... I don't think I'd be able to keep up with you though, it seems like you've got quite a bit of talent and experience.

Well..this is what we'd need.

1. Sold skills with illustrator/photoshop/after effects & flash

2. Imagination that is determined to create an entertaining professional piece of work.

3. Total dedication into doing number 1 & 2

If I took all the hours I spent working retail, customer service, or restaurant....getting paid min. wage.....or all the wasted brain activity doing nothing watching TV or "hanging out"....and focused it on a funny produced 5 minute short with cool characters, story, and music...I'd feel pretty damn good about myself.

Does anyone else feel the same way?

v nice for a beginning animation, but damn, frame by frame?

dunno how much youve done, but there are motion guides for non-linear motion and you can have movieclips within each other with actionscript to control them.. seems like an easier way of doing alot of what youre doing...

just my opinion though

I haven't used Flash all that long, so I still haven't figured out a lot of details. For things like the bird, I think frame by frame looks best.
