Dead jars?
    #2147509 - 11/30/03 07:57 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

My friend had about 10 jars colonizing and growth has slowed down tremendously or maybe stopped in most or all of them. She said that the jars have been this way for a good two weeks, though she didn't label them and document well enough to keep track of individual jars. She is using a heating pad to heat her incubation chamber, and she said that the temperature is very variable even if left at one setting, and sometimes it gets as low as the mid 60s and as mid 90s, though only at the bottom surface of the terrarium, and even there, only at part of it. Is it possible that any or all of the jars are dead? She assumed that if they were, some sort of contam would overtake the dead mycelium or grow in at least some of the jars, but there's no contam to be seen. She'll probably try casing the mostly colonized jars. Is there anything she can do at this point besides wait?

The strain is Eq. Also, there's no real funk coming from the jars or anything, or at least anything strong. She said nothing smells characteristically rotten.

They have been inactive for 2 weeks? That is not a good sign. The fact that the temp varies so much is definitly NOT good for them. It confuses them. How far along are they? percentage wise. As far as what she can do, I don't know.

Sounds like they stalled on you. Are the jars sealed completely? You should let some air exchange happen. The fluxuation in temps could also be affecting the growth.

Possibly less than two weeks, I'm not sure. I don't know why the temp varies with that pad like that - do most heating pads have that problem? Some are near or at 100% with small uncolonized spots (could these just be verm?) and others are at 60 or 70% and up. She was originally heating them using an aquarium heater in a glass of water, but the heater was of poor quality and cracked after about a month and a half.

Daywalker: the jars have 4 holes in the top w/ a verm layer. Should she loosen the lids?

Dropping temps like that will slow growth and tell the myco to stop growing and start producing pins, keep them at a solog temp that doesn't varry much, try putting them in a warm place (preferably 86 degrees) for another week and see if that helps get growth back to normal.

Yes, unfortunately this temperature control has become a real pain in the ass. Due to housemates, my friend can't raise the room temp to even the mid 70s. I suppose it might be best for her to buy a two rubbermaids and use an aquarium heater.

What she's worried about is that the high temps killed the jars.

If it was in the mid to lower 90's then don't worry about it killing the jars, go with the rubbermaids, it'll help the jars now and future jars.

hell yeah I got the two rubbermaids with the aquarium heater 40 jars almost 1/2 colonized in 3 days. Stays consistantly at 85-87 degrees.
