Few questions for my first mono
    #21474311 - 03/29/15 12:20 PM (9 years, 1 month ago)

I have 3 quarts of wbs fully colonized.  I have my sub coir/verm/gypsum pasteurizing in a bucket right now . I followed the bucket tek.

I plan on using a 1.5:1 spawn to sub ratio.

It is somewhat of a mini mono 30qt translucent bin.  I figure it will come out to about 4.5 inches thick.

Few questions though.

1. Do I need to hydrate my wbs before I use it with my sub?  If so how should I go about this ?

2. Do I have to wait until the sub is at room temp before use?

3. I planed on casing, how long will the sub stay pasteurized for use?

4.  After I mix the spawn/sub do I need to poke holes in the top of the tub for gas exchange while its colonizing the sub?

Thanks!

Dunk your grain for about 20 minutes before spawning to bulk.
Do not add spawn to your bulk sub if its still warm, wait for it to cool.
Don't poke any holes in it.

1) it isn't necesary, but some growers do. You can just add tap water to the shaken jars, let it sit for 20 mins or so, then use a strainer or the cap of the jar to remove excess water.

2)You can wait until room temperature, but you can also dump it in when the temperature reaches 30 degrees Celcius.

3) I do not understand the question

4) Thats not realy necesary, watch out for too much gas exchange. You want a high CO2 concentration in the tub in order to promote mycelical growth

coir/verm/gypsum is not a casing layer, but a substrate. You can do some searches on this page for recipes for casings
