Rabbit sub Hair question
    #21472563 - 03/28/15 10:42 PM (9 years, 1 month ago)

ok so rabbit byproducts involve manure, urine, uneaten hay, pellets, and lastly... HAIR... oh and sometimes flies

DOES THE URINE, FLIES AND/OR HAIR RUIN THE SUB???

would it render the substrate useless and inevitably contaminate the sub or cause poor colonization results?

Here's one of my guinea-pig manure experiments. There was hair in it and some shavings, you can see here

It fully colonized and fruited

Although it did get Trich during the 3rd flush.

So to answer your question I don't know  You could try it though.

Make sure it doesn't smell like ammonia at least or it'll probably fail.

Sterilized manure is more vulnerable to contamination than pasteurized manure so if it's sterilized it should be kept sterile until it's fully colonized and you shouldn't have any problems.

so it might be better to steam it in a large pot at 160F? that would also kill off any larvae from the flies right?

In general it's best to just pasteurize. 160F for an hour will kill any insects and most mold spores while leaving some of the beneficial bacteria alive.

thanks very much, i read earlier RR said that beneficial bacteria repel mold spores in some way, that is a big issue i have dealt with. One day i will breed a significant amount of Flemish giants for largest size, poop yeild and nicest fur. genetics is so interesting!
