Simple Filter Tek (Australia) * 1
    #21458570 - 03/26/15 04:41 AM (9 years, 1 month ago)

Hello everyone. I am based out of Melbourne, VIC. I was having trouble finding proper jars and Tyvek material for filters. We don't have Wal-Mart, ball and kerr jars are difficult to source as are large pressure cookers. I was poking around at The Reject Shop and found 1 litre milk bottles for $2. Snagged a few of them up and ran to Daiso where I found 20 surgical masks for $2.80. Whipped together some simple filters that I think will work great.

First step was to drill a hole in the lids, I used 8mm.

Second step was to cut the sides off of the masks so I could pull the pleats out flat.

Next step cut it in half, leaving each of the remaining stitched edges together, to help hold the layers.

Place the mask under the bottle cap, lightly twist the cap back and forth to score the edges. Be careful not to twist too hard as it will deform the lid and not seal properly, ask me how I know.

I then removed the lid and you can see where the top of the bottle left an impression and where the sides started to cut through.

Cut in between the indention and lacerations. No need to be perfect with the cuts, a little oversized is ideal.

Insert the new filter disk into the cap and Voila! No more $2 filter disks these cost 3.5 cents!

The holes in them bottles are extremely small. If you colonize substrate in them I imagine you will have a hell of a time trying to get any spawn out of them:shrug:

I'll be using them with grain and regular shaking, if I have trouble I have a flow hood so I can poke it out, these would also be perfect for liquid culture, or for oyster and lions mane when directly fruiting from the container.

Have you ever dealt with mushroom spawn before? It doesn't break up as easy as you might think.
I assure you it will be very difficult to use them.
But by all means give it a try:thumbup:

Thanks for doubting me but I have been growing for a couple of years. I just moved to Australia and it is hard to source the things we take for granted in the states. With a flow hood or even glove box one can break the spawn out with a sterilized poker. I currently am producing 5 different species of spawn via wheat grain and bran, coffee and have liquid cultures as well as agar dishes and master slants.

0.6 micron, small enough to filter out bacteria. I haven't had any trouble with the filters getting wet when in the PC on other jars I've prepared like this, just cover with foil. When I shake them I don't shake vertically I smack them horizontally against my hand. So far I haven't had a contamination in 10 weeks of cultivating here in Aus. We don't have tyvek envelopes available, couldn't even find a tyvek suit though it may just not be branded the same. I made some cheap dishes out of polypropylene food containers with a suit that may have been tyvek to filter and have had no problems with those. Just used sterile process when working with the flow hood.
Edit: 0.6 micron is the GPF rating these actually go down to 0.1 micron

You cant order that stuff off the net where you live? No way to order canning jars or spawm bags any of that stuff?

Man I feel for you what a bummer to own a flow hood and have to jury rigg everything!

You can order them, but they are pricey. So far this is the overall most cost effective way I have found to do them. I found 1 litre jars, no seperate bands but there are quality issues, the lids don't fit well. I had my pressure cooker shipped as soon as I got here because the only ones you can readily find are about 6 litre and they are proud of them. Right now I have no car so I have to stick to affordable things that are within walking distance. Mushroom farming is somewhat abstract in the states, here it is completely alien. There were 3 major suppliers in Victoria but 2 just closed shop. There is a plethora of small markets attached to shopping centres here and many farmer's markets. The going rate for buttons retail price is 11 - 12 dollars per kilogram. I've only seen oysters in 150 gram packets for 5 - 7 dollars. I've spoken with a couple of markets around here and they sell anywhere from 30 - 60 kilos per week and they only get second choice after the major markets. Their cost is around 8 dollars per kilo. If I can get my production costs low enough I should be able to compete, especially in the localized area because they won't have to drive or pay to have them transported. The advertisements are also pushing mushrooms as a healthy food and if you can buy gourmet for near what you pay for standard buttons then why not!

So I pulled the bottles out and did some King Oyster Agar transfers into them. Filters seem to hold fine through cooking, noticed a bit of rust from the cheap steel cap. Will add a small layer of rtv around the drilled edges to correct it. The small amount of rust on one of them doesn't seem to be an issue at this time but we will see as it cultures.

Coles sells 1L ring jars for a few bucks, lots on eBay local as well. I ordered 10 sfds from America free shipping for like 12 bucks, each filter disk made 6 filters made to fit jar lids the rest is bunnings

I'll have to check it out, I've never seen the jars with bands. I found a wholesaler yesterday at Tullamarine that gets the 1 litre jars for a good price but I haven't had time to make it that way.

Couldn't find it on the main Coles website but once I put in my post code I found it.
http://shop.coles.com.au/online/tas-metro-mowbray/cook-dine-preserving-jar-9910128p

And I've found The Reject Shop and Kmart best for plastic containers however both sell jars as well.
