Poppy sprouts keep falling over!

I recently planted some Californian & Hungarian Blue poppies (quite randomly, I'm afraid) in 6" pots. Things were going fine and dandy until they started falling over like lazy ass plants. What kind of sane, success-driven plant chooses to act like this? I'm getting more and more frustrated because I keep propping them up, encouraging them to follow their gravitropic instincts like normal plants do. Here are some examples:

In all seriousness, I really don't know what's causing the problem or what action to take to help my babies. Am I overwatering? Not giving them enough sunlight? Nutrients? Is this just a phase? If anyone has any experience with poppies, your help would be greatly appreciated.

I went through the same thing with my first batch of poppies I started in a greenhouse awhile back. I think overwatering could be a factor, it could also just be normal.
Mine seemed to struggle to support themselves until they started growing nice and big.
Try using tooth pics or another small wooden support to help some stay upright as they strengthen, maybe water less often, or just water more carefully.
I know a big issue with mine was me watering, even with a spray bottle, and the droplets would knock over upright plants which then struggled to regain that rigidity.
As they grow stronger they will get better anyways though, the best advice would be to just let them do their thing. Some poppies don't mind it pretty dry too.
I have some turkish poppies that wouldn't even sprout until I let their tray dry out Hope this helps somewhat and goodluck

poppy seedlings will naturally fall over a bit till they root strongly. But yours look etiolated to me. Are they getting full sun?
Also fyi I only see California poppies in your pics. Don't see any somniferum.

Thank you, I will definitely try the tooth picks. Glad to know they're healthy sprouts.

They're sort of in the shade, but they get about an hour of full sun a day. The problem is that the sun here is so harsh that it burns my seedlings to death half the time. Can poppies stand strong sun?
And some Hungarians did sprout . . . but then they died a day later. I don't really know what went wrong.

From my limited experience the seedlings are pretty fragile, strong sun and or heat seemed to fuck mine up. Once they start putting off big leaves they are more hardy.
I would say maybe too much sun killed em off as babies, I don't have much poppy experience though.

Poppies require cool conditions and full sun. Yours are etiolated due to lack of light. It sounds like your climate might just not be suited for them.

I'm pretty sure the climate is right for them considering they're the state flower here.

Here in Oregon, the climate can be anything from desert, maritime, mountain glaciel, rainforest, etc. just because you live in California does not mean your local climate is ideal for a plant that grows naturally in California. But it probably does explain why you're having more luck with the California popppies than the somniferum.
But if you can't put them in full sun, they will not be healthy. Don't kill the messenger.

There are rainforests in Oregon??
What I meant was, there are plenty of them [Californian poppies] growing in my area, so I know it's the ideal place to grow 'em. The somniferum could be having troubles due to the climate so I'll do more research into providing them the right conditions.

Until last year I would have agree, but those do look like the California poppies I grew last year. At least the catadilion does.
They look like they are reaching, they're not getting enough sun. Poppies can be a pain in the ass that way, finicky. Cali's need full sun, you'll notice their stems are elongated and even turning whitish in color. They need more direct sunlight, IME. Try the toothpick idea anyway, as many do droop before rooting and setting their second set of leaves. My experience with Calis is limited to one years growing tho, but my experience growing Somniferum is much longer. I don't see any somni's there yet, so you've got time to get them into the sun more.
Hope that helps. Best of luck, Den

Agree with them being etiolated and the seeds probably should have been sown earlier, to establish themselves before the temperatures rose. Poppies naturally fall over as seedlings but soon stand back up once their tap root is developed enough for them to do so. Propping them up with toothpicks is a waste of time because they'll stand up eventually on their own.
