It's a hard one to debate on one hand there are places where it is hard to grow enough food to survive so consumption of animals is needed. I my sf have had any animal products in three years and my dr said I am healthier than I was three years ago. So in my opinion animal consumption my be needed in certain areas but I don't think we should raise animals for slaughter if you can't go out and kill it yourself you jus shouldn't eat meat. FREE THE ANIMALS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No, it is not physically necessary to consume animal proteins to survive. there are a few plants that produce complete proteins like quinoa. also if you combine beans with corn you get a complete protein profile. there's no opinion to be had here other than what you prefer to chow down on.

I agree that everything the human body needs to survive can be derived from non-animal sources.  Whether animal consumption is necessary or not is the actual question.  I think that question is rather complex.

I think that on an individual scale it is not necessary if and only if you can adequately provide the nutrition that animal products provide.  If you should change your lifestyle accordingly (or if it is worth an effort to) is another debate.

On a global scale I do think that it is necessary.  People would lack the information needed to have a proper nutritional diet without meat.  How many people wouldn't have the information?  That I am not sure of.

The morality of eating animals on the other hand is interesting.  Personally I do not think it is wrong to do so.  Animals are used in so many products that it is impossible to avoid.  If everyone stopped eating meat they would still be slaughtered for their value industry-wise.  Consumers use the meat and everything else goes to make goods in our day to day lives.  There is a good ted talk about pigs.
https://www.ted.com/talks/christien_meindertsma_on_pig_05049

But I don't like the ted website, so it is also on netflix

Simply put, no it's not necessary.

that's actually the exact reason I went vegetarian.  "do animals need to die for me to live?"
the direct answer is no, so I stopped.

a few times a year I'll eat some salmon to recover from really long days in the mountains, but only when I can justify taking the fish's life.  I still feel pretty guilty about it to be honest though.

yeah i don't know, i think in the future our diet will be largely vegetarian and lab grown, i dont think real living conscious animals will have to play a part in it. as for so many products using animals, i don't even think that is a lasting thing either, it's not impossible to invent new products and things to replace that "need"

I don't think companies could ever justify the cost of creating products without animal parts.  After all business cater to their shareholders and shareholders only care about their money.

except when using animals is more expensive than a material that's been developed that's cheaper to use

The less ancestral relations we have to a species the less likely we can incorporated harmful microRNAs into our bodies which leads to dng mutations thus protein mutations. This has been shown in the case of mad cow disease. If you eat the meat, it incorporated in pryons in your brain and you become a mad human.

I eat meat and it is what made humans intelligent.

It seems to bear weight. You see, in order to provide energy for our large brains, we evolved to eat meat, which provides a quicker more easily obtainable source of calories and nutrients. Mind you, this was back in caveman days, though and much has changed. These days, most meat is inundated with steroids, antibiotics and Bob knows what else, so the Vegetarians do have a point about meat being somewhat risky these days....

then why aren't other carnivores on our level of consciousness? (minus dolphins and whales which are a close second)
i was reading something somewhere about autism and how the evolution of our genome/dna mutated and allowed certain parts of our brains to grow faster and larger than our cousins.

Most people who subscribe to that theory would claim that cooking the meat has to do with why we faired better.

I don't fully support one or the other.  I'm simply pointing out that they are both only theories at best.  The most honest answer is always, "I don't know for certain."

It just rubs me the wrong way when people state the current accepted theory as fact.

Science has been turned upside down more than once, and that would never have happened if everyone kept on thinking we had it all figured out.

Just theories, all I'm sayin

is meat necessary to survive? probably not.  Is there a moral imperative not to eat meat? probably not.  Will i continue to eat meat? unless somebody makes it illegal, yes.

Well, most carnivores are quite intelligent. Witness animals like the wolf. Of course they are no where near the human level, but then again, we aren't strictly carnivorous - we are omnivores, so we need plants in our diet. Our close cousins, the chimps even indulge in a little meat eating from time to time.
