All-American VS. Presto PC???
    #2141537 - 11/28/03 01:10 AM (20 years, 4 months ago)

I belive i have narrowed down my PC search. I have been trying to find a decent used one, but have had little luck. So i plan on using this pressure cooker for awhile. I have heard that All-American are the way to go, but the Presto seem like it would work fine. Looks like the lowest price on an All-American that will do at least 7 quart jars is a 15.5 quart. I can get a Presto that is 22 quart for 40 dollars les. The All- American is $140 and presto is $100. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Use to have a Presto. Have a All American now. The All Americans are built like tanks. Very Easly worth twice as much as a presto.

I have hte presto 18 qt got it for $75 new...no doubt the all americans are better, but I must say the presto isn't bad...it is sturdy, works well. I'm happy w/ it. I guess it comes down to money and how much you will use it. But I still feel I can give my recommendation for the presto.

I want to add I'm probably going to be using the PC no more than once a month. I personally woudlnt' see spending that much for that little use...but if you are going to be using it a lot, I can see why the presto will eventually break, it is good but not great...

All-Americans have no gasket -- I've warped every gasket on a P.C. I've ever had.

All-Americans are better, but you don't NEED that expensive of a P.C. unless you really want one. I just got sick of my other ones breaking.

The other problem i have is finding an All-American in town.  I have found a Presto and a Mirro.  If I find it here i dont pay shipping.  Which could make the price go up another 20 for the all-american.  Thanks for all the input

I'll chime in. I have a Presto. GOt it from Sears for like 50 bucks and have no problems with it. Cooks a mean brisket! Like jong21, I don't use it but once a month or so. If I were to use it more, I'd invest in a more capable model.

My fish personally loves the older 21 quart prestos. they too are built like tanks. replaced the o-rings on them and removed the jiggler smokestack and replaced it with a plug (you can also use some think foil (folded over) and a plumbers clamp to close off the jiggler smoke-stack.

here is an ebay link. my fish had a newer presto but in his opinion it sucked (and stopped working after 4 PCs and it was brand new) and my fish has never had any problems with the older ones.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2361650628&category=20630

worth every penny. and this badboy hold ten quart jars, and like close to 30 1/2 pints (my fish hasnt used half pints in years so it might be like 27 or 36 (i forget if it held 4 layers or three layers of 9))

EDIT: oh yeah the 16 quart ones arent bad either, but make sure to go with the ones that look like the 21 quart i linked.

Hey, I'm not knocking presto's I'm just saying the all american's are better built. You do pay for it though. Presto's work fine and will handle most loads. I was just using mine everyother day way back and the gaskets would go. The all american I can hit with a car.

I would like to point out that i was not knocking the all-americans either

perhaps then the prestos are built like LAVs?

i used to have a mirro. i got rid of it when i bought my presto.
the seal blew out on the presto and i lost a large batch of jars and bags i was going to pc. i bought a new seal for the presto, but i also bought an all-american pc, so i wouldn't have to worry about seals blowing out again.

it would be better to spend that extra $40 for the all-american pc now, than paying $40+ for extra seals that the presto would need in the future.

All American cookers are the kind of cooker you will pass along to your grandchildren, no joke.

If cost effectiveness is a problem consider this:

Typically you can get a comparible sized All-American for only 40% more than the Presto or Mirro model. However, you will NEVER have to buy a replacement seal for your All-American. There's an off chance you might have to replace things like the "over pressure plug," but this is usually only something you do every 10 years or with heave (and I mean HEAVY use).

New seals, with shipping, for Presto and Mirro models usually run over $12 with shipping. They usually have to be replaced just about every year as they will dry and crack with use or non-use. Replace 3 of these seals and you've already made up the difference in the price of the All-American.

If you plan to be involved in this hobby for a while, invest in an All-American. You can always use them to produce wonderful gourmet mushroom spawn in the future not to mention can your own fruits and veggies (assuming you might have a small garden or a great local market for fresh produce). The 21 quart seems to be the most popular size, due to the ability to fit more than just 10 pints.

In the course of our company operation we have over 14 different cooker units from All American. These range from the small 910 all the way to several 941s, a 25X and even the new bad mamma: 75X. We LOVE our cookers and sterilizers, you cannot beat All-American for quality AND cost!

Thanks for the info everyone.  I ended up buying a presto 23 quart for 64.99 at Bimart today. (no shipping) I am going to give it a few test runs and see what i think.  I have 30 days to bring it back.  I do plan to have this hobbie for awhile so i might just take it back and purchase an all american.  The lowest price that can do at least 7 quart jars i could find was $140. (15.5 quart)  Thats 75bux more, but maybe it will be worth it.  Thanks again everyone for being so helpfull.

i wanted an all american from the first day i read about them.  but like most people, yeah, the money was an issue. so i keep lookin' in thrift stores and in the back of my mind keep wishin that one day i'll see an all american that's been taken care of, and being sold at an unheard of price.  needless to say i'm still lookin, but in my hunt i've collected 3 pressure cookers and for about $13 (1-microwave pressure cooker[$3.00], 1-6qt pressure cooker[$5.00], and 1-16qt cooker from the 40's, (you wanna talk tank? it might not be much to look at but it's so heavy you can't help not to look at it cuz it's hell moving it from place to place so you kindda just "display" it as an antique.)[$5.00 down from $10.00,  %50 fridays are great]
ya never know what you might find.  those pc's will never compare to having an all american, but it's helping me get there. till then i'm gonna keep sterilizing wbs in whatever pc i can.........ahhhhhh insporational, no?  oh and my point.... go with the all american.

sorry i ramble...

I just recieved my 1st pc: AA 15.5 qt #7 never used. The
book is missing tho. Across from the gauge there is some
kind of "valve". Do I just add H2O, fire up until it shows
15psi then throttle back the temp? Is the valve a overpressure
device or is that the other device in the cover? Anyone ever
seen a pdf of the operating manual online?
