Problems initiating pin formation
    #2146328 - 11/30/03 12:21 PM (13 years, 6 days ago)

My friend needs some help with his grow. He is using the SOS (sea of shrooms) tek, and there are problems. He followed the tek, and everything was going fine, the mycelium grew to the valleys in the casing, and he put them in his terrarium to begin pin formation. They have been there for eleven days now, and there is no change whatsoever. The casings have pulled away from their containers, and the general consensus is that they are too dry. He thinks he didn't add enough water to the casing mixture. He has been misting often to try and keep them moist, but his thought is that this is only keeping the very top parts moist, and they need more than just that. His questions are these: Would it be possible to do the dunk tek on these? He's read that you can do it for cakes, but these are like mini-casings. Also, could he do the dunk tek and the cold-shock at the same time? Is this batch lost? I keep telling him that I don't think they're lost, because the mycelium continues to grow. One final question: with all this extra mycelial growth, do you think it would be wise to dunk the casings (if dunking is even possible for casings) in a mixture of 10% "dog food water" (see: http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/7951 ) to replenish the nutrients that the extra mycelial growth has used up? Thanks in advance for all replies, this is his first grow, and I think he might have gotten a little ambitious in trying the SOS method. Hopefully, with your help, he can salvage what he has and get a little fruit.

Thanks again!

if the myc. it's growing that means its not dry, so cold shock its what u need ... keep the temp at 78...

sounds to me like you might have an overlay problem. i recommend that you give it a good deep scratch.

Diacamomo: The moisture requirements for mycelial growth and pinning are quite different, although I do agree it needs a cold shock. I am very convinced that the casings are much too dry (they've pulled a good 1/4 inch away from the cups), so the main point of the post was to see if I could dunk them. Do you know if dunking is possible with casings?

Automan: I thought about an overlay problem, also. The thing is, the mycelium isn't growing UP through the casings, it's growing OUT, to the sides of the cups. Also, all of the growth on top is rizomorphic (ropy) growth, it's not at all matted or dead. If I am able to dunk, though, I'll probably re-case, so a deep scratch would be good. I never understood why it is called a "deep" scratch, because you don't scratch deep, just a few milimeters. Strange.

Thanks for the reccomendations, guys.

I guess he could try replenishing the moisture by pouring some water down the sides where the casing has pulled away. Definitely cold schock.

you can dunk a casing or your can mist it. I had a problem with my cakes pinning but i later found out they were too dry so i just cased and wetted them down with a good dunk. good luck to you though, no matter what you deciede to do

Do not dunk a casing... It makes ano sense.  The casing layer is the moisture source.  Mist it heavily for a couple of days, coldshock and be patient.  My friend has had to wait nearly 15 days for pinnning to initiate on one of his casings.  Although, the patience paid of in his largest flush ever...  Good luck
