using guest network for mobile devices instead of main network: more or less secure?
    #21458158 - 03/25/15 11:42 PM (9 years, 1 month ago)

I'm concerned that I have insecure wifi devices connected to my network such as iphones that aren't updated and older laptops.  Would it be more or less secure to put these devices on my guest network rather than keeping them on my main wifi network?

My thinking was that this would isolate those devices from access to the router if they were comprimised.  Using the iphone app inet network scanner I have been able to easily access my router and that's got me worried.

I'm using a dd-wrt flashed router, dual band and pretty good dual core processor running at 1200mhz.  I mention that because I'm also running a vpn but have only been using the client software on my main pc since the router can't seem to handle the encryption for covering the other devices while maintaining adequate speed on my hardwired pc, even though I read reports that it could before I purchased it.  So, since those devices are not using the vpn, I feel that my network is less secure.

What can I do to secure my network further using dd-wrt?  I already have a 40 some odd random character password.

It is hard to answer your question without knowing what the differences between the regular network and the guest network are.

How did you access your router with an app?  Does it do some kind of exploit?

If you want your router to be secure, use iptables to block access to inbound ports.  It is probably already blocked from the internet, but you could block them from the inside also if you are worried about internal devices.

I'm worried about internal devices because I was hacked through some complicated means by somebody on my network.  The app is called inet scanner on ios and it lets me go right to my login.  I'll probably get around to learning more about dd-wrt this weekend since I only just got it and want to learn how to use it and about networking in general.

Thanks!

Damn the frigging DD-wrt is awesome but it's way above my current knowledge level.  I don't understand how to configure the firewall and I think that might be the issue.  The guest network is enabled, I can see it on my devices and can even connect to it, but there's no internet access.  I configured it according to the directions on the wiki.  Would it be safer or better to just use my network but enable the wireless isolation?

I also wonder if I could make use of a second router for this situation.  I have a decent N-Router that I could use and I only want to keep a few older devices on the guess/isolated network, or anybody that comes over and asks to use wifi.

Also, if I have a wireless AC router right now, and I were to hookup my older wireless N router as a second router, would that create a problem and slow down or cause my AC router to stop being able to transmit AC speeds?  I currently have 3 slower N devices, no G, and 2 AC devices that I was hoping to get the full speed on.

I realize this is probably a complicated question, but even if anybody could speak to whether the guest network vs wireless isolation is more secure or better I'd appreciate it.  I've heard things about it being unsafe to have an open guest network, but I've seen other sites recommend it as an alternative to wireless isolation.

I honestly would prefer to isolate my main pc which is connected to the ethernet from anything wireless.

Thanks!
