Germanwings plane crash: Co-pilot 'wanted to destroy plane'
26 March 2015 From the section Europe
Co-pilot Andreas Lubitz - pictured here on his social media profile - is not known to have any links to terrorism
The co-pilot of the Germanwings flight that crashed in the French Alps, named as Andreas Lubitz, appeared to want to "destroy the plane", officials said.
Marseille prosecutor Brice Robin, citing information from the "black box" voice recorder, said the co-pilot was alone in the cockpit.
He intentionally started a descent while the pilot was locked out.
Mr Robin said there was "absolute silence in the cockpit" as the pilot fought to re-enter it.
Meanwhile, the head of Lufthansa, the German carrier that owns Germanwings, said the pilot had undergone intensive training and "was 100% fit to fly without any caveats".
"We have no findings at all about what motivated the pilot to do this terrible deed," Carsten Spohr said.
Mr Spohr said Mr Lubitz's training had been interrupted briefly six years ago but was resumed after "the suitability of the candidate was re-established".

Mr Robin said air traffic controllers made repeated attempts to contact the aircraft, but to no avail.
Passengers could be heard screaming just before the crash, he added. A view of the cockpit of the Germanwings aircraft, photographed a few days before the crash
Mr Lubitz, 28, was alive until the final impact, the prosecutor said.
The Airbus 320 from Barcelona to Duesseldorf hit a mountain, killing all 144 passengers and six crew, after an eight-minute descent.
"We hear the pilot ask the co-pilot to take control of the plane and we hear at the same time the sound of a seat moving backwards and the sound of a door closing," Mr Robin told reporters.
He said the pilot had probably gone to the toilet.
"At that moment, the co-pilot is controlling the plane by himself. While he is alone, the co-pilot presses the buttons of the flight monitoring system to put into action the descent of the aeroplane.
"This action on the altitude controls can only be deliberate."
He added: "The most plausible interpretation is that the co-pilot through a voluntary act had refused to open the cabin door to let the captain in. He pushed the button to trigger the aircraft to lose altitude. He operated this button for a reason we don't know yet, but it appears that the reason was to destroy this plane."
He said the co-pilot was "not known by us" to have any links to extremism or terrorism.
But he said German authorities were expected to give further information on his background and private life later. Analysis: Richard Westcott, BBC Transport correspondent
The focus now moves from the mechanics to the man flying the plane. An accident expert has told me the investigators will pore over the co-pilot's background and that of his family too.
Did he owe money? Was there a grudge? They'll look at his religion, whether he was in trouble with the law, whether he had a stable love life. This kind of event is rare but it has happened before, although the reasons vary widely.
After 9/11, they made cockpits impregnable. It keeps the terrorists out, but in the end it also allows someone to keep their colleagues out too. Airlines have to make a call. Which is the bigger threat - terrorism or suicide?
Passengers were not aware of the impending crash "until the very last moment" when screams could be heard, Mr Robin said, adding that they died instantly.
Meanwhile, relatives and friends of the victims are due to visit the area of the crash.
Lufthansa, which owns Germanwings, arranged two special flights for families and friends on Thursday - one from Barcelona and one from Duesseldorf - to Marseille, and both groups will travel on by road. Separately, some relatives who did not want to fly are travelling by bus from Barcelona.
The second "black box" - that records flight data - has still not been found.
couldn't be more fucked. maybe putting locks on the fucking cockpit isn't such a fucking grand idea. terrorism, what a joke... correct me if i am wrong but if it weren't for the bullshit on 9/11 we wouldnt have these 'safety' features in place. you keep terrorists out, sure (lol) but also everyone else. fucking screen your pilots better, but this is an OBVIOUS security and safety issue, it's not like this is the first time a pilot has dived the plane into the ground either.

on another note, i think what needs to happen with the industry is adding more advanced avionics and remote control systems outfitted with algorythms and AI to better control these planes in case the pilot decides to do something fucking retarded like this. the computer systems would ultimately be monitoring the flight path and cameras both infrared and otherwise would be able to judge the orientation of the aircraft and adjust accordingly, locking the suicidal pilot out and continuing to the destination. don't you agree?

It's like the second time this has happened that it's been confirmed, we lost more planes than that in a couple hours on 9/11.

Yeah it happened maybe 3 or 2 times. There is debate about that.
In the US you have to have 2 people in the cockpit at all times. So one guy goes to take a shit. A flight attendant comes in and makes sure nothing like this happens.
It's a tragic situation that's for sure but terrorism kills a shit ton more than a few suicidal pilots.

Guidance systems by nature are easy to spoof and cause an airplane to crash if a pilot is not there to notice what's going on and correct the course. So I disagree.

I think that would be a logical next step....and, we probably already have the technology to do this....Either that or put a jon in the cock pit.

Some notable ideas.
What a disgusting way to kick the bucket. He could have just killed himself in the privacy of his own garage with a rope and a bar stool and not killed 150+ people in the process.

Possibly a terrible idea, whats to say someone can't hack their system and cause even more harm? Pilots should always have the utmost control.

and i would have to disagree with you. all that means is that they need to add more advanced technologies to the aircraft and fine tune things so they AREN'T "easy to spoof." what age are we living in again???

Nothing is UN hackable. This has happened literally two or three times in the history of aviation. What if Isis or some other groups of nut jobs figure out how to hack it?
This plane did have a fly by wire system. Which is the closest thing we have to what you are talking about.

Iran hacked our most advanced technologies in this field and stole a drone from us, people have crashed drones like this, it's been used to shore boats. Like I said, by nature, it's insecure. You don't know what you're talking about here. You ideas are not new or good.

I don't think it's right to call it suicide when you take 150 people with you.

My thoughts exactly. If you wanted to kill yourself, you'd do it without the extra mortalities. Seems more like an act of terror to me; I just think the news is holding off on mentioning terrorism without substantial evidence.

No, it's murder where the collateral damage was himself.

haha, shroomery likes to upvote sass
what do you know about our drones and their data being encrypted or not? i don't, for all i know they aren't. are you saying it's impossible to encrypt the data being transmitted via AES 256? i highly doubt we are using that shit on our aircraft.
i don't think you know what you're talking about either

That's what I'd call it. If you shoot someone then shoot yourself, it's called murder-suicide, same goes if you stab someone then slit your wrists or any variation of their death then yours. It's not called terrorism, not suicide. Just because terror was induced before death or they all went at pretty much the same time doesn't make it terrorism IMO.
