Major Space Launch - March 27 @ 3:42 PM EST - Longest Mission in History * 3
    #21459708 - 03/26/15 09:12 AM (9 years, 1 month ago)

On March 27, 2015 @ 3:42 PM EST, NASA astronaut Scott Kelly and Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko will climb into a Soyuz spacecraft perched on the desert steppes of Kazakhstan's Baikonur Cosmodrome for launch to the International Space Station. Their mission?  To spend a full year off-world, orbiting the Earth in microgravity: the longest space mission in human history.

The purpose of the mission is to study the long term effects of microgravity on the human body, so as to gather information which will go toward preparing crews for future missions to Mars.  Tomorrow's launch will be an historic moment for space flight, and a beacon of fearless human endeavour as we inch ever closer toward becoming a space-faring species.

Coverage of this monumental event will begin at 2:30pm EST on NASA TV.  In the meantime, 24/7 live views of the International Space Station can be accessed via NASA TV's "HDD ISS Views" Channel, fourth on the channel selector list.

Tomorrow, watch history unfold!

If this is launching off at kennedy, i doubt it's going up tomorrow because it's going to rain during the day. the launch will likely be pushed back.

I could have sworn they were launching on saturday, the 28th though??

EDIT: just looked at the launche schedule, there's no launch  for saturday. i swore i saw one for the 28th though wtf

The normal ISS crew rotation is between 3 and 6 months, usually on the low end of that.  As far as I know, one year on the ISS will be the longest off-world mission in history.  The data gathered from their stay will go a long way toward developing and planning a mission to Mars, something sorely needed at this particular socioeconomic juncture.

Nothing invigorated American entrepreneurship and innovative spirit more profoundly than Kennedy's declaration "we will go to the moon."  It inspired an entire generation of scientists and technicians, who are of course the architects of all social and material progress.  Getting to Mars is a critical goal, and this mission represents one step closer to it.

Oh wow that's really cool, definitely going to watch the livestream. We've come so far with technology, especially with regards to space flight.

Can't wait to see what develops in the next 10-20 years

They're pretty old for astronauts, aren't they?

Maybe I just think astronauts are supposed to be young.
