Satellite internet and gaming

So I live in a county island which happens to get horrible internet. Literally, the only major ISP available is Century Link which I have now. Running at an advertised speed of 1.5mbps.
It fucking sucks. I am pretty much over it and am now shopping other possibilities and those are only Satellite.
My biggest issue is what about gaming? I'm told that ill have very high latency and first person shooters will not work well.
Im looking at Wild Blue Satellite Internet for a couple reasons.
12mbps is WAY better then the 1.5mbps im getting
There is a data cap but I can afford the unlimited freedom package which is 150gigs a month and no fees for going over that data cap, ever.
Once again, the biggest issue is gaming. Has anybody used or still does use any form of satellite internet for gaming? Particularly a PS4.

1.5mbps is a bit low, but honestly satellite internet isn't all that suitable for FPS games.
You're looking at at least 250ms just for your signal to hit the satellite and return. Your best bet is to look up reviews of others who are using satellite for gaming.

I'm not sure what the current offerings are, but back in the day, the uplink was through telephone and only the downlink was through satellite, so on top of high latency, upload speeds were horrible. Maybe stuff has improved these days, I don't know.

Nope, latency will be sky high still. Regardless of your download speed, your ping will be unbearable for the majority of games, especially FPS. You're probably looking at around 600-1500ms on average, depending on the weather. Casual games or turn based or strategy games, not a huge deal... but for twitch gaming.. yeah it's gonna suck balls.

I'd try calling up Century Link and threatening to cancel unless they up your bandwith.... It's a long shot, but ya never know...

If you imagine a road, bandwidth is the number of lanes available for travel while latency is the speed limit of the road. You might have a 150 lane road which can move a ton of cars at the same time, but if the speed limit is 10km/h, it is going to take a very long time for your cars to arrive at their destination.
Satellite can have decent bandwidth, but because of physics, will always have very poor latency. It works very well for things like video and bulk downloads, but very poorly for anything interactive. With an interactive gave, it will take around a second from the time you input a move to the time you see the results of that action. This will result in it being highly annoying to unplayable depending upon the game... mostly on the unplayable side.

I did. They told me 4mbps was available in my area and set up a tech to come out.. They were a no show. So I call up again and they say that it was never scheduled and 4mbps isnt available in my area. So I say give me someone else, who then says "OH YES it is available!" . So a week later a tech actually came out and he says "Nope. This isnt possible. See ya later."
Idk what I should do at that point? Call Century Link again and get some idiot who hates his job (again) and complain?
