Yes it works, it doesn't hold as much water as verm, watch out for drying, it does give good color indication about when its drying out. Most varieties of cubensis will eat through a coir casing layer very quickly, so don't give it too long to incubate, and patch case if you want even fruiting.... stay high.

you could, but it would be to your benefit to search for some verm (it's an indispensible ingredient in this hobby)

Vermiculite IS nasty. Better get it off your shroomies before you eat. Its like eating dirt. Also heard it causes health problems when digested.

I can confirm that it isn't good eating.
But this, "Also heard it causes health problems when digested." is really vague.

I remember a couple years ago there was a scare in the gardening industry about vermiculite containing asbestos. This has since been proven to be incorrect, but I think there is probably alot of misinformation circulating about it. I still wouldn't want to eat it though. I guess I wouldn't want to eat coir pith either. Just the shrooms...

In this thread...
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat...;o=&fpart=1
...a guy tried straight verm, straight coco, and 60/40 mix all side by side in the same containor seperated by aluminum foil for comparsion, and the straight coco did alot better than the other two, I think he got paranoid though cuz he deleted all of the pics, but it was a big diffrence, the coco coir was beter than the 60/40 and the straight verm wasn't even pinning, at least I couldn't see any in the pics, the coco was covered in a even pinset wish he still had the pics up =(

vermiculite is expanded mica. it's rock, literally. it contains no poisons.
while i wouldn't recommend you eating an entire dish of vermiculite (verm curry? vermburgers? a verm sandwich?) you won't do yourself any harm by digesting a few minute particles on the ends of shroom stems.
just don't replace vermiculite in your recipes with asbestos or strichnine, and you'll be fine.
