who has tried those USB record players?

I've seen them around, especially the brand called Crosley. They look portable and is USB operated so the music will come out of the computer speakers. Seems neat but I read of people saying it's the worst product you can buy. Maybe they are old timers?

They suck, the sound quality is terrible, and they'll ruin your records. Decent record players start at about $200. The uturn orbit, and the ATLP120 are the two cheapest that are actually worth a damn. Anything cheaper than that will be absolute shit, and it'll hurt your records.

This. I have an AT-LP120 plugged into a receiver and two bookshelf speakers and the sound is amazing. Need a new cartridge though, mines out

My friend just got an AT-PLP60 and its actually a perfect little turntable for someone new to the game. Doesn't have all the extra, somewhat unnecessary features that the AT-LP120 has. He has it ran straight into speakers via RCA cable and it sounds great. Much better than Crosley or those other cheap players.

Well I just bought a brand new USB turntable to see what's up, it's $20 from Ebay. Looks like Crosley but generic/unbranded. I don't care much for it but it's $20 plus the records I bought were from the thrift store so I don't care about it. It converts records to mp3s as well.

Just go to a pawn shop or garage sale, you can get really good deals on record players there.

I snagged a record player and mixer from a garage sale last summer for $40 and it turned out that they're worth over $90 a piece.

The newest of the three record players I have is a 2010 Ion that has built in speakers and usb capabilities.

My mom got it for me for Christmas that year and I love this thing.

The speakers are surprisingly of great quality, and you can download any vinyl you play on the record player into your music library via usb.

I hear terrible things about Crowsley all the time.

good thing mine is not crosley but generic/unbranded. LOL. I would think they all get them from China and slap their brand on to it. They all look the same (Ion, Croslet, etc.). The one I just ordered is 33 RPM, I'm not sure what these speeds mean, can someone explain. Can this play a 7 inch and a regular size LP record?

33rpms is the standard speed most vinyl is played at.

The three speeds most record players play (but definitely not all) are 33, 45, and 78rpms.

I have a Moby Grape album that uses different speeds for different songs.

If you play a record meant for 33rpms at 45 or 78, it will sound like a chipmunk is singing.

And vice versa, a record meant for higher speeds will sound slowed down at a slower rpm.

but who would sell a player that will make records sound like shit? What is the purpose? I would think it's either standard or nothing. Not sure what you're saying but I think you're saying that 33 rpm comes in every players, right? There is no sole 45 or 78 rpm players? what was the purpose of these other speeds to begin with? Is it the equivalent of a "rewind" or "forward" on a CD player to fasten the song to a favorite part?

Haha a lot of brands make shitty record players, because they're "portable" people will sacrifice sound quality for the convenience of having built in speakers vs carrying around external speakers.

Yeah, every record player will have 33rpms built into it and there aren't any that will exclusively play 45/78rpms (most record players will have 33 and 45, only some will have 78 included).

I'm not entirely sure how these speeds originated, except that I know it has to do with how the record was pressed.

I usually don't use the higher speeds to fast forward and there definitely isn't a rewind, I just pick up the needle and drop it where I think it has to go if I want a certain part of a song.

So a 33 rpm plays 7 inches? So any record player can play any vinyl record? How about those extra large records (I think 18 inches was the largest I've read about). Also do I drop the needle at the very top of the record to play song #1? I have no idea how a record player works. LOL.

Yeah most standard lps are 33, a 45 usually has one, maybe two short songs per side and is much much smaller with a larger hole in the middle. You will need an adapter ring to play 45s, some turntables come with the adapter already though.

As for your second question, yes drop the needle slowly onto the outer edge of the record for song #1. If you want to play a specific song on that side, look what song number it is and then look on the record for the thicker lines and count inward till you get to whatever song you desire.

I just received my first USB turntable and I must say that the sound quality sounds like a mono alarm clock radio. It sucks but it's $20. Not sure if once I transfer these records into mp3 version it would then sound better when I play the mp3 version? The speakers I have plugged in to my laptop is good quality but this USB record player seem to make my speakers sound like what I described earlier.

Since this is my first time owning a turntable, how do I stop playing the record do I simply lift the tone arm and if playing records do I simply drop the tone arm at the upper tip of the record?

Also where the record sits on has some type of round "rubber mat" do I remove this or it should stay there? It's removable, not sure if it's just for cover protection since it came in brand new. Do I remove it and throw it out or what? The record sounds the same with or without the round "rubber mat" under the record when it's spinning.

Yes you just lift/drop the tone arm to stop/play the vinyl on the edge unless it is one of those automatic ton arms. Leave the mat on the platter, it helps hold the record in place and some reduce static.

Some of these records I bought from the thrift store and has some marker on the cover so how do I remove this? Would vinegar work? How about those bathroom degreasers?

Ehhh I have no idea, but be careful you don't ruin the cover entirely.

I usually just leave the marker on. For the low price, I'll put up with someones last name on it.
