Partially Colonized Jars and Fruiting from Jars
    #21447836 - 03/23/15 03:59 PM (9 years, 1 month ago)

Hello. A month ago (give or take some days) I inoculated my brf jars, then 3 or 4 days later they started growing. Fast forward to now and the jars (1 pints) are mostly colonized. I don't see anything that blatantly looks like a contam, and some are still crawling their way towards the bottom. There are a few that look like they outright stopped, however. I'll post pics soon asking for opinions, but until then my question (experiment?) is if I would be able to fruit them just by popping the lids off and putting one of those clear plastic solo cups over the top of them?

Okay here are my jars I think they might be a little slow because temperatures have been kept around 71/72. Also I took 2 pictures of each jar: the side I determined to look the best and side I think looked the least good. Any thoughts? Could I fruit half-colonized jars (I read that pint sized jars sometimes pin before they're completely colonized)? I'm worried about they drying out since they're so old.

I think some of these are sideways sorry it happens

You will probably have grow from the jars unless you plan on crumbling the cakes. Those pint jar will make it impossible to get the cake out.

They're not that wet though I don't think? I mean, I put way too much water in when I was mixing the flour and verm (like literally I could pour it in the jars) but after PCing it looked pretty dry. I think some of the effect is from the cake shrinking from the sides.

If thats how much water you put in the mixture then, well you put to much water for sure. That will slow things down and make it more prone to contamination. Thats why the recipe for this tek calls for rather specific amounts of each 1/2 cup verm, 1/4 cup BRF, 1/4 cup of water or 59ml I believe. Those amounts are for 1/2 pint jars. Just scale up if you have a bigger jar. Follow those and tweak ever so slightly but you should never be able to pour it into the jars.

Yeah for 5 half pint jars I would use 2 cups Verm, 1 Cup BRF, 1 Cup Water.

The steps that I was following said that when you tip the container just a little should pool at the bottom, but I could never get it to pool. I kept adding water until it was sloshing lmao. Noted for next time.

Just follow 2/1/1. It looks like you used fine verm and the 2/1/1 works for that. It shouldn't pool with the finer stuff.

I have noticed however that the chunky shit cant handle as much water. Ive never seen pooling with the finer. The tek was maybe used with chunky verm. Everytime I use the standard 2/1/1 with boulder verm it pools. After adding the BRF it becomes sorta stickyish. Still usable, just not the fluffy airy mixture that it should be.
