Is this an ideal hunting area? Pittsburgh Woods
    #21442272 - 03/22/15 08:54 AM (9 years, 1 month ago)

Sorry the pics are side ways.. Anyway, it's still kind of cold.. 40 degrees and below, its been raining quite often, I went out to that location and seen old dried up oysters or whatever on trees yesterday, no signs of any mycelium growth or anything.

There's little water paths that flow down so there's alot of moisture, the soil gets wetter as I descend downward.

Yea the lower parts would probably be ideal. Have you seen any mycena or anything besides tree hugging mushrooms out there in PA? Just went out to see if I can find at least one fruit, still nothin yet.

i can absolutely positively guarantee that you will find a mushroom, and surely many different kinds of fungi growing in that environment.  beyond that, you'll just have to look for yourself eh?  that's how nature works. its just not that predictable (unless they were spotted before) so show us what ya find.

it could be worse.  this is a good time for scouting the lay of the land though because you can actually *see* it without the leaves in the way.
learn how to identify some trees by the bark during this time, it will help later too.
in about a month you'll want to be looking around tributaries to the ohio anyway, and probably the whole valley is searchable.  look at some old threads to give you an idea of what you're looking for.

lol, no i mean like the lay of the land without the leaves on the TREES in the way.  that way you can look down in a gully and see whether its dry or whether it has a nice little stream at the bottom that runs most of the year etc.  you can see whether there are a lot of fallen logs laying around rotting... that kind of thing.  finding places to go back that have good micro environments for what you're looking for later
