Harvesting Oysters
    #21442280 - 03/22/15 08:58 AM (9 years, 1 month ago)

A harvesting question.

I read somewhere that you want to harvest a whole column or bag at the same time. What I read said that if you harvest one cluster before the rest it will slow or stop the growth of every other cluster in the column or bag. I am growing in five gallon buckets with success, but my clusters do not always grow out at the same time which forces me to harvest one or two more aggressive clusters before the rest.

Is it true that I should harvest all at once?

What could I be doing differently to encourage clusters to form all together?

Many thanks!

No.

:whathesaid:  at minimum mine are spread out over 3 days.  sometimes a week or more, so some will be on the second flush while others are on their first.  that's a rarity tho.

when you pick all but say one or two clusters, those can become really large if you let them sit for long enough.  since the organism is putting all of its energy into fewer mushrooms.  this is common on bottle king oyster farms where they trim all the pins except one or two and those get rather large.

Thanks for your response.

Yea, I haven't found it to be true either. I just wanted to make sure. I did harvest a huge cluster today that was the last to be picked from that bucket. Like you said, all the energy went into that area.
