Temperature Control
    #21437784 - 03/20/15 10:18 PM (9 years, 1 month ago)

Hello Shroomery.

I am designing a growroom. My latest design issue is controlling the inside temperature.

I'm hoping the community here will critique an idea.

Is it absurd to think that If I run PEX in the slab that I could pump water through it to regulate the temperature inside the growhouse? I'm thinking of using several 6000W hotwater heater elements in a sump and a freezer to modify the water temp. The water would be circulated with an inline pump.

I've considered conditioning the air but I feel like the ventilation system will just exhaust it right out. And my concern about IR heat would be the cost of installing it where the radiation warms all the bags.

Thanks in advance for any input ya'll might give.

easy and cheap solution is a minisplit. heats, cools and only recirculates the air in that room. so if you run plastic all around the room and have somekind of airgap /clothes changing area ..... you wont drag anything in and it will be clean enough.... minisplits cost maybe 400 to 1200 bux, you can install them yourself... you drill a small hole through the outside wall and fill the gap with greatstuff.

whats the temp of the room without regulation normally range from? and what are  you trying to grow and at what temps?

Ductless systems won't handle the humidity in the long term and they aren't used on rooms this size. I've called several and they all say that 95% RH will kill their units. I've also called several greenhouse HVAC companies, such as Modine, and they also say their units aren't up to the humidity. One suggested piping the conditioned air into the room, keeping the unit out of the humidity.

The problem with conditioning the air in this room is that the ventiliation system will just exhaust it as soon as it is conditioned. Literally spending money to condition outside air just to have it almost immediately return to the outside.

The temperature of the room ranges from 20F to 110F. I live in Austin. The space is 45x80x12'.

I am growing Oysters, Lions Mane and Shaggy Mane. All at 70-75F.

they have ductless systems which can handle that space. but i agree about the humidity it will dry out when cooling. you can add humidifiers. and you could run it like you said on a pipe system with radiators and fans. i would think that the heatercoils from cars would do this job nicely... but for a room that big you will need a lot of them, i suppose you could build one out of a coil of copper in a smaller pipe that air is pushed through.

when its on cool cycle you will want something to catch the drips

if you went with ductless, you could pipe your dripline back into your humidifier

i didnt read the part where the company said it couldnt do it, i find that odd as many places sell minisplits in places which are naturally 90+% all the time... brazil hawaii etc.

This is my concern with your ductless suggestion.

Does anyone have anything to say about PEX in the floor? I'm hoping to have that idea critiqued.

i think that just heating and cooling the floor, will not have as much effect as heating the air ... in a system which is open to the outside. because the air exchanges will also be thermal exchanges. and radiation from the floor will take a while to warm the area.

so it would seem like you'd use more power to get the same result as having a system which heated the air around the level of the mushies.

which you could do with a heatercoil from a car. or a radiator from a motorcycle.

you can also insulate your outside ventilation pathways... so that you get less loss of energy.
